Very noticeable brake squeal.

Featured Replies

Hi everyone just wanted some advice if anyone has experienced this on their s3 8V.

I’m experiencing some brake squeal in my car it’s not as noticeable when the car has just started but when it warms up slightly the noise is very noticeable once it warms up. I initially thought it was the brake pads since they were due for a change so I got them replaced (both front and back aswell as brake discs for peace of mind) however this didn’t get rid of the brake squeal. I went to another garage explaining them my situation and they diagnosed that it was the front brake pads that were causing the issue and that I should replace them. They then replaced the front pads with brembo pads. I went away and I drove the car normally and there was no brake squeal for atleast 10 days. However after 10 days the noise had come back and has since come back and the mechanic doesn’t seem to understand the cause of this. Can anyone guide me?

Hi check some goon has not greased the back of the pads as you are not supposed to  if it persists buy some anti squeal backing off of eBay and stick into the back of the pads that will shut it up.

On the subject of sqealing brakes, I've had my Audi's brake pads and discs changed in the past, and a month ago I had to change the rear calipers and pads (again) after the rear discs were getting super hot - cost me a small fortune. Three weeks later my brakes are squeaking, and all my brake discs are super hot to the touch after a 10 minute drive - Any idea(s) what the cause could be; Issues with the electronic hand brake?...The car is going back to the garage tomorrow morning.

If your brake discs are hot after a 10 minute drive, and you can test this by going for a short drive, don’t use brakes and coast to a stop. Nine times out of ten, then the brake calipers, specifically the dust sleeve on the main piston has swollen. Oxide corrosion causes the sleeve to swell, and prevents the piston retracting. Replacing discs and pads won’t fix it, you’re throwing good money after bad. Tell tale signs apart from hot discs is a burning smell and hot spots on discs where you can see discolouration.

Two choices. If you’re spanner handy, and sounds like your not, then you’re looking at new calipers, especially on 2013 car. Another option, is full brake caliper strip down and rebuild, front and rear. That means, wire brush, paint if you want to, new square seals, dust sleeves, etc. Budweg sell kits on Autodoc, or try BiggRed. You’ll need VCDS for electric handbrake retract. I’d also follow up with brake fluid change. I also add a touch of red grease under the dust sleeves for longevity and use ceramic grease on pad shoulders. Use new shim set too if required.

The garage took my car for a short drive; I told them it feels like the calipers aren't disengaging causing the discs to get hot. They've suggested new calipers & pads on the front, but didn't pick up on the heat on the rear discs.

I coasted a lot of the time & tried to Not use the brakes as much as possible - noticed a slight change in temperature to the discs. Can't smell any burning and can't see any discolouration like I've had in the past.

Thank you for the advice - I'll definitely look into getting stuff off Autodoc and try & get a brake fluid change.

Why Autodoc and their high postage rates?

There are other U.K. suppliers with a choice of brands at competitive prices. A quick forum search should give you some alternatives. Just let us know if you are still in doubt.

HI it could well be the front brake hoses have had it, had this with my daughters Q3 put new callipers on and the same thing then I changed both front Flexi pipes and it was all good, being as the brake system is diagonally split if both fronts are hanging on the backs will do the same because the brake pressure is not releasing because of the front pipes.

Steve.

Thanks for the info Steve - I didn't know that about the hoses; I'll be sure to look into that.
