Coolant leak advice

Featured Replies

Good Evening all,

I’ve been having a bit of an issue with the coolant level on my avant for a week or so now, I’ve noticed white residue around the expansion tank itself. Is this quite a common thing to go wrong? The car has done 132k miles, just thinking to replace this before getting it serviced to reduce costs.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi is it diesel, if so there could be several causes for the loss of coolant, and does is run adblue ?

Steve.

Good Evening Steve,

Thanks for the reply, it’s a 2014 3.0tdi but does not run Adblue. I tried checking with the engine running, it looks like there is coolant pooling at the bottom of the front of the engine, I tried to take some pictures earlier but they aren’t great quality.

Thanks again,

Paul

Coolant expansion tanks can become brittle with heat. If it’s only started over the last week, then that’s as good a place as any to start. Check the rubber tubes and clips too.

If you have access to a diagnostic reader, then it wouldn’t do any harm to scan the car too. My brother has a Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0TDI and they are known to have coolant issue in the valley of the V6 engine as a coolant pipe fractures. Earlier Audi 3.0TDI engines also potentially suffer similar fate with a couple of plastic valves that succumb to heat and plastic becomes brittle. Unfortunately it’s quite a labour intensive job to fix, for relatively inexpensive parts. This video is good explanation. https://youtu.be/Vki9TDVINM0?si=qO2s3hoR7-txs6-W

Thank you so much for your reply, it’s looking like it’s leaking from behind the radiator, I had a bit of a better look yesterday. I guess I’ll have to prepare myself for an expensive bill 😥
