Time-Capsule 1996 Audi A4 (B5) 2.8 V6 30v Quattro SE

Featured Replies

Headline: Time-Capsule 1996 Audi A4 (B5) 2.8 V6 30v Quattro SE – 23 Year Ownership – 74k Miles

The vehicle is registered on a Private Plate 'D11DAX' if you want to search the vehicle. The plate that will come with the car is 'R77GTL' as in the photos

Overview:
Reluctantly offered for sale is this structurally exceptional Audi A4 B5 2.8 Quattro. I have owned and cherished this car for the last 23 years, during which it has been strictly garage-kept and stored in an air chamber. With just 74,500 miles from new, this is an increasingly rare "survivor" example of the flagship 30v V6 luxury saloon. "V5C in my name for 23 years".

Key Highlight – Bodywork & Chassis:
Unlike most B5s of this era, the bodywork is in excellent condition and the chassis is structurally superb. I have invested in a complete underbody de-rust and underseal to preserve it for the future. It sits on clean alloys with fresh tyres and remains in original Audi specification. [1]

Interior & Maintenance:

  • Interior: Impeccable full blue leather interior—a rare and luxurious combination.

  • Provenance: Full service history with all receipts and MOTs during my 23-year tenure.

  • Major Work Done: Cambelt, alternator, brake calipers, vented discs, and full rear poly bushes. New shock absorbers and Audi coil springs also fitted.

The Condition / The Project:
The car has recently developed a fault on the ZF automatic gearbox. It currently has no forward drive, though Park, Reverse, and Neutral all function correctly. Due to a lack of lift access and personal circumstances, I am unable to undertake the gearbox repair. This is the only reason for the sale of an otherwise mechanically and aesthetically sorted modern classic.

Technical Note on Transmission:

The car is fitted with the ZF 5HP19 automatic gearbox. It has recently developed a fault where forward drive is unavailable, though P, R, and N remain fully functional. This is a known symptom often associated with the 'A' clutch drum. Having already performed a full Auto Trans Service and Fluid change during my ownership, the rest of the drivetrain is well-maintained. This is a straightforward fix for someone with a lift or a specialist contact, and is the only thing keeping this car from being in daily use.

"A replacement reconditioned ZF 5HP19 unit is available from UK specialists for approximately £1,550, or a used unit can be sourced for around £400.

Included in Sale:

  • Full history file.

  • Original rear lamp clusters (to return to 100% OEM look if desired).

  • Current "Lexus" style rear lights (as pictured).

Summary:
This is an ideal opportunity for an enthusiast or specialist to acquire a low-mileage, rust-free B5 Quattro. With the gearbox remedied, this would arguably be one of the finest examples of the 2.8 SE remaining in the UK.

Location: Car is located in Luton, Beds, UK
Price: £4000 ovno
