Audi A4 B9: Identify Matrix LED from the Outside

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding the high beam assistance systems of the Audi A4 B9 — more specifically, how to identify the different lighting features from the outside without turning on the ignition.

Background: I am considering buying an Audi A4 g-tron. Unfortunately, many sellers do not really know which equipment their vehicle actually has. Therefore, I would like to be able to identify these features directly from the pictures on mobile.de listings.

As far as I know, there are the following lighting assistance systems:

a) Classic high beam assist
This system has existed since the late 1990s. It simply switches the high beams fully on or off when detecting oncoming or preceding vehicles.

b) Matrix LED / selective high beam assist
With this system, individual sections of the high beam can be switched on or off separately, usually via Matrix LED headlights. This makes it possible, for example, to avoid dazzling a vehicle ahead while still illuminating the roadside areas to the left and right.

c) Cornering light
In this case, the headlights actively swivel into the corner when steering. I do not mean the common solution where only the left or right fog light turns on, but an actual swiveling low or high beam system.

Now to my actual questions:

a) How can I recognize from the outside whether the car has Matrix LED headlights / selective high beam assist installed?
I assume there are visible differences in the headlights themselves.

b) Are cornering lights and Matrix LED / selective high beam assist always combined?
In other words: Can I assume that a car equipped with Matrix LED / selective high beam assist automatically also has cornering lights, or were these systems available independently from each other?

Thanks in advance for your help!

High beam assist works from a camera in the screen under the mirror.

Steve.

Didn't even know there was such a thing as a G-Tron.

Can I ask is this a UK based car?

Like all new technologies, that comes with its own issues, such as knowledgeable technical support, main dealer only (that comes at a price), and with Audi that doesn't always equate to quality. Anyway, enough of my ramblings.

B9 Matrix, great headlights. Never experienced them personally when driving. But have long been an advocate of decent headlights. Bring back Bi-xenon headlights! Appearance is normally a series of cubed sections on the headlight. Once you've seen one, you know what to search for.

I think you need to be stricter on your car searches. As soon as say the extras you're looking for, such as panoramic, a particular colour, virtual dash, then the seller knows you're particular. Matrix LED will be an expensive extra or fitted as standard on Vorsprung editions.

Cornering lights. No idea if that's included in the technology. I would assume high beam assist is one of the main advantages.

Anyway, good luck on your search.
