NOISE COMING FROM BACK OF CAR

Could anybody advise me on what could be wrong with my( 52plate A4 avant 1.8T ) when i turn the ignition on  you can hear what i presume is the fuel pump start up at the back but when i start the car up there seems to be a constant wearing/humming sound coming from the back somewhere my even be the pump its self and it appears to stop just as i am bringing the car to a stop but only for a second and then starts again. any help would be appreciated cheers kev.
