Power steering - grinding noise - searching for parts

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Could you recommend a UK based PS rack reconditioning company?
The cheapest I come across:
Steering Specialist Limited: 18 Months Unlimited Mileage Warranty (they collect your steering rack and fix it, so it is not a replacement service)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-A4-8E...oAAOSwQTVV8VZ1

Western Power Steering Ltd. The Specialist: 24 Months Unlimited Mileage Warranty
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-A4-B6...kAAOxy63FS8JuR

The most expensive ACS Power Steering: 12 Months Unlimited Mileage Warranty a bit short (honest?)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-A4-PO...0AAOSwxCxT2jYb

I would consider an original part instead as they say that the reconditioned ones last months not years, but do not know what PS rack model will fit in in there (the part is well hidden I cannot read any numbers)
Besides for them to send a replacement is not a problem but for me it is another £200-300 for labour.
What do you think about breaker companies?

I can also predict additional cost of a new PS pump. I do not know how often these parts fail at the same time, but can see that some people have been billed for this at the same time.

Please advise
Thank you

Hi Mike...welcome to the Forum!

I would personally recommend an original equipment rack as I have battled with recon racks before and they don't tend to last long in my mind.

Obviously, always ensure the correct fluid is always used and I would even recommend replacing the fluid once in a while to preserve the system.

Good luck with it and let us know how you get on

I had the PS rack on my LHD 1986 VW T25 camper van rebuilt by this company in 2003. http://www.power-steering.co.uk/

It is still going strong 100,000 km later, and I am very careful to replace the gaiters to keep out dirt and moisture.

I could not find an exchange rack, nor anyone to repair mine in France for a reasonable price. PSS didn't have a LHD rack for exchange, so I sent mine to them.

I presume this is the same company, the website and phone number are the same, but they were based in Greenwich, London, when I used them.

It does seem to be the same company. If you click on the "CONTACT US" link at the bottom RHS the main workshop address in Greenwich is given.
