Faulty speedo head

Featured Replies

Can you change speedo head units on a4 tdi 61 reg without having to change miles on replacement unit?

Hi Peter

I don't fully understand the scenario with regards to speedometer miles.

Are you saying if you change the head unit will it keep the miles that the car actually is or if it will still show the miles it had on the "New" unit?

Also if you wanted to change the miles on the new head unit that would be "illegal" having a look online.

Hope someone else can give you a better understanding/help with it.

Regards

Bradley

Hi Peter....welcome to the Forum

As Brad-B5 has mentioned it would be an issue to change mileage without logging it, for example; if you change the mileage and try to sell it with a lower mileage then it is illegal. If you buy a secondhand unit  and clock it up to the correct mileage that is fine but usually some form of note within the service history would suffice to explain why the mileage has changed and MOT mileage records, etc.

However, looking at the age of your car either the mileage would change automatically from the key (as is the case with BMW) or the other scenario is that you would struggle to replace the instrument panel / speedo head without it causing major programming issues as this is part of the CanBus Gateway and is integral to the whole electronic system.

Your best bet is to get it repaired if it is faulty....here is a link to a company that may be able to rebuild yours

Keep us in the loop as to how you get on with this
