White Smoke

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

My Audi has developed a smoking issue. From what I can see in the rear view mirror the smoke is white. When I park up and get out the smell is very strong/ maybe unburn diesel?

The car pulls and runs really well. Its a 2.0 TDI 2005 reg. From cold start no smoke, after about 5mins it starts, and is more visible sometimes more some times alittle less.

I've run a quick scan with my simple obd2 tester, its come back with

fault codes: 17055 - Cylinder 1 glowplug circuit, glowplug, 17056 - Cylinder glowplug circuit, 17057 - Cylinder 3 glow plug circuit, 17058 - Cylinder 4 glow plug circuit.

Anyone come across this issue or know of the possible cause or test I can do?

Thanks

Hello Tj,

Always difficult to diagnose without access to the vehicle, but I would suggest it's worth getting the injectors tested. If it were mine, I would be looking for a recommended diesel specialist in your area rather than an Audi dealer or independent. The reference to glow plug issues seems a little odd, since you don't mention that the car is difficult to start from cold. I would invest in some diesel specialist advice/basic checks before changing the glow plugs.

Let us know how you get on.

Kind regards,

Gareth.

What you really need is someone with vcds who can take a look at what is happening real time

would you say the white smoke is less when you are driving but more when you have been idling? If so I'd say you have one or more leaky injectors and a proper diagnostics will tell you that.

I took the car over to the mechanics today. They guys had a quick look and said straight away the turbo is on its way out. They said it will only get worse so not to drive it.

A new turbo for a BKD engine code is going to cost around £700 from the dealers. Is there anyone on this forum that sells genuine reconditioned turbos?

Just have the place replace the turbo cartridge.... BKD's standard turbo cart is only £85 I think.

They'll have the remove the turbo, replace the cartridge and re-install.. will be around £300+ labour
