As a newbie to the wonderful world of Audi, I'm a little baffled by the service intervals. 

So if I do lots of miles on a motorway ( usual stuck in miles of stop start traffic ) I can leave the service for anything up to 19k or two yrs, but obviously it will only be two yrs if your doing 10k.

and if that was the case I would need to be on the fixed service( great for driving around empty town centres) So realistically with high mileage and on flexible service plan I will still have to visit Audi every 12 to 18 months.

But if its the time and Inconvenience of visiting the garage that's tempting me into a flexible service there is one thing I don't quite understand, say I get to 17000 miles and have the car serviced which obviously when translated from German to English is just a bog standard oil change. I then drive away happy thinking I can stay away for almost (2yrs not) so imagine the joy when 2K later the car will tell me it needs another trip back to Audi for another wallet lobotomising Inspection. Which as I understand it is the actual proper service with Audi mechanics donning their medical gloves and almost getting dirty.

So apart from pushing the oil and engine to its full extend is there any point to the flexible service ? surely I'm better to visit Audi 10k 20k 30k etc.  as apposed to long-life which could be 17k  20k 27k  30k

(Notice the extra visit with the long life service) 

I've  recently purchased the car and its on a flexible service plan just had its first service , I intent to keep it for a good few years so regardless of my mileage perhaps I should change it to the fixed plan and maybe this is actually the best option. 

What's your thoughts?

I cover about 13000 to 14000 miles a yr

Sorry slight mistake with that example on average mileage of 17k flexible would be 17k 20k 34k 40k including inspection service. So you gain an extra 7k at the start of the service plan but if you have to return for inspection you don't really gain over fixed. With Audi having to inspect anyway may as well Change the oil at the same time. Unless I have misunderstood this service schedule.

Hi Barry don't worry we all have to learn somewhere :) it's good that you are showing a keen interest in the servicing of your car :) 

I find it odd your Audi computer told you it had to go back to the dealer after 2k miles. 

With the long life service which most VAG cars are on now the service schedule is: 

Minor, major, minor etc 

Minor = oil and oil filter change 

Major = oil, oil filter, air filter, pollen filter etc change 

Brake fluid and aircon service recommended  every 2 years 

As you've said correctly long life is 20k or 2 years but if it were me I'd want it checked yearly for piece of mind. 

When ever your car goes in it should have an inspection anyway which Volkswagen and Audi call a health check. You should get a video as part of the health check showing any potential issues with your car. 

I can't really comment on Audi's service plans as IV not really had any experience with them, sorry.

Hello Barry,

I'm sure Steve is far more up on this than I am, but let's say you cover 18k miles in say 20 months and your car will need servicing then on a Longlife schedule since it has reached its mileage recommendation - so you visit your Audi dealer and get it done. 

4 months later, when the car is now 2 years old (or at a 2 year interval after that), you get a service indicator up, to tell you to come back - this time to have the brake fluid changed. Is this example correct?

Yes that's the kind of thing I mean Gareth, except in my case the car was serviced as part of the purchase deal and the dealer switched it to the fixed service plan, some kind of mistake I'm told. they tell me they are happy to change it back to flexible. I'm sceptical of the flexible service and I have a feeling that by the time sensors clog up and send a signal for a light to come on it may be a wee bit on the late side. Having just experienced a blown turbo on my old car I'm not going to skimp on oil changes.

So I'm not sure whether to say just leave it on fixed and get it service every ten months or switch it to flexible and still get it serviced every year whether it needs it or not.

looking on the cars mmi its telling me I need another routine inspection in 2000 miles. which I understand is another service. This is what I find slightly irritating if have to keep going back and forth randomly because of various warning indicators. I've owned and serviced motorcycles all my life some with very short service intervals and real painful shim inspections but this all just seems confusing to me. 

Still love the car though maybe I should just leave it on the drive and sit in it from time to time.
