Transaxle compatability

Featured Replies

Good evening,

Please could I ask to tap into the wealth of expertise out there for some guidance on which engines fit which transaxles.

My son and I are close to starting a kit car build and we are down to a short list of a two. One is a ford option and one is an Audi option. The Audi one is based on the A4 longitudinal 4 pot into a transaxle. Could anyone give me a few pointers to choose the best combination and how to identify the myriad of options. I've been doing a lot of reading on line but the more I read the more options I seem to have. Advice from some one with real world experience would be appreciated.

Our criteria is quite simple: we are looking at the 1.8t engine but we are not looking for huge power or daft boost levels. We would like to opt for a combination with minimal turbo lag even if this means a limit to power output.

I am naturally drawn to the TT as a donor as they are at the top end of the BHP range as standard (nothwithstanding the S4 models)  but these are of course transverse......do these engines bolt straight on to the A4 transaxles.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

One other thing ....what is the effect of using a Quattro gearbox if you only use the front wheel drive part and seal off the drive that would go to the rear wheels. With no load on the rear axle does all the torque go to the front? It is obviously not designed to work that way under normal conditions so for long term use would it be under too much stress?

Thanks for your time.

Welcome to the forum Zane, you'll find the members on here are a friendly and helpful bunch 🙂

what kit car are you building? I do love kit cars 🙂

truthfully id go the Ford option as parts will cheaper.

cheers

Steve
