2002 A4 pause on Initial acceleration

Hello all, new to the website, I have 2002 A4 petrol , it's only done 54, 000 miles, when I put the first pressure on the accelerator in lurches for a split second before it accelerates, it almost feels like brake pressure, it's quiet a violent lurch ( if I'm cruising at 5 mph in 1st gear and I push the accelerator there's a gap with no power, a lurch) and it's not ideal in slow moving traffic, any ideas? Thanks for your help and suggestions.
