Engine oil draining too quickly

Hi. Just wanted a bit of advice.

I have a 2010 a3 1.8 tfsi, the car seems to be hoing through its oil very quickly and when me and my stepdad looked at the exaust its is spitting out quite a bit of black liquid and occasional smoke when i rev the engine. The image i have provided is what came out holding this bucket a few inches away if that helps. I have only had the car about a month and have alrady had the oil light come on once and so topped it up and have then had to top it up again from half way since then. I have only driven about 400 miles since buying the car.

I saw one post on here that said failed piston Rings are common with these engines could that be the case with this one.

Any help and advice would be much appreciated thanks!20220911_171139.thumb.jpg.5b7dfa9815c401690c8cb05379375b09.jpg

Hello Joshua,

Thanks for joining and posting your plea, and sorry to hear about your issue.
Excessive ( to the point of being unacceptable) oil consumption is not uncommon with some engines within the period of your car. Others with more in-depth knowledge of the engine involved should be able to colour in the detail for you.
The first question is - did you buy it from a trader a month ago?
Kind regards,

Gareth.

Yes i did. It came with a 3 month warranty so im hoping that it may be covered. But want to have at least some idea on what im dealing with. I spoke to them a couple weeks ago and they just told me to monitor it for a while but did not say much else

Hello Joshua,

I think you will find that there won’t be any cure for this, with your current engine.
The warranty company may dictate an ‘official assessment’  of the oil consumption via a main dealer - and this will cost. Make sure you don’t end up with the tab! This requirement will of course erode into your warranty period, and you end up in running out of time.
I’m not sure if the seller’s  responsibility is for 30 days only, or if it is the 3 months you talk about, so you will need to take legal advice on this - CAB should help.
It’s essential that all your dealing - past and going forward - are recorded in writing ( e-Mail should do) with the seller.
In my opinion, you should seriously consider rejecting the vehicle and getting your money back, since I would not see a way forward where a quick and convenient resolution would be practical.
Perhaps you could let us know how you get on Joshua.
Kind regards,

Gareth.

  • 4 weeks later...

Just wanted to do a quick update on everything thats going on.

I took the car back to the dealer a few weeks ago and after a bit of testing they have confirmed that it was infact the piston rings that have failed. They are getting in a VW specialist to do a full engine rebuild for me completely free of charge and have just given me a courtesy car in the mean time.

I want to thank everyone for all your help and advise. It is much appreciated and has really helped

Sounds good Joshua. If this were mine I would be asking for an ‘invoice’/detailed statement of exactly what has been done to your engine. I would guess that simply replacing the (skinny) rings is likely to result in similar issues, so it’s likely to require new pistons, and that will be (very?) expensive, so will they do that?

Kind regards,

Gareth.

Well they said that the were doing a full rebuild and that there was quite alot to replace. They did not say every single piece that is being replace but they said it is about £1000 in parts being shipped directly from audi in germany. And thanks for the advise i will definitely be asking for an invoice

Hi it will be the modified pistons and rings and associated gaskets and seals, they know its a problem and after the good old boys in the U.S. cained them they decided it was easier to cave in and produce a retro fit piston and ring assembly.

Final update to my ongoing issues.

I have recently returned the car and am being issued with a full refund due to the engine showing signs of failure and after an independent inspection comeing back with and telling me that they do not think i even have my original engine in the car. Id like tothank everyone for being so helpful i have really appreciated it. I think im going to stay away from this generation of Audi now. And save up for one of the facelifted 8V models instead

Thank you for letting us know Joshua. It is rare for folk to inform us of the ends of their stories. It's a shame it has taken so long, but you got the right result in the end.

I wonder if the dealer will do the decent thing and scrap the car, or will he sell it again to another unsuspecting victim. Perhaps we be hearing of this car again.

PS. There is an awfully long blank space at the end of your post. Is there supposed to be something there that my computer is suppressing?
