From what year do TFSI not have oil consumption problem?

Featured Replies

I have a diesel A2 and am thinking of swapping to an A5 coupe, probably petrol. The TFSI engine excess oil consumption is well documented, together with Audi finally correcting some ..... but what I cannot find despite much Google searching is what year did Audi finally fix this on the production line? Whenever I find an article that says it was fixed in a certain year, people seem to pop up with a newer vehicle that still has the issue, certainly up to 2012.

Has it been properly fixed by Audi? If so, what year please for an A5 1.8 or 2.0 TFSI? Ideally, from what VIN?

Hello Michael,

Welcome, and many thanks for joining.
This may not help much, but I recently looked into this for a friend who was looking for a Skoda Fabia (which was eventually decided against), and I’m only now only going from memory - not wise! but….

I believe the issue can affect vehicles as early as 2009, and I think went on until the 2015 model year. I did find some informed on-line information, but I didn’t save it I’m afraid.
Any particular reason for moving away from diesel?
Kind regards,

Gareth.

Thanks Gareth,

I mainly do short runs, with occasional motorway use, so petrol is usually advised. But the A2 diesel which I currently have is great as it doesn't have a DPF and. despite being manual, also has no DMF. I suspect, but don't yet know for sure, that the A5 will have DPF, DMF and EGR, the maintenance of which (with my short trips) I would prefer to avoid.  I appreciate that DPF and EGR and probably cat (if it has one) can all be deleted, but this requires a skilled remap of the ECU and might or might not get through the MOT. And, of course, auto would avoid the DMF.

I may very well get a diesel again as I live in a rural area and do my best never to drive to London ... however some local cities such as Bristol are also already making life tough for diesel drivers.

2015 sounds interesting re TFSI, but my Google research had people saying it was fixed in 2008 and 2011 only for owners, having driven some 70,000 miles after these dates, to report that the huge oil consumption problem is still there. I am hoping that someone can tell me that from a certain point Audi redesigned the pistons and oil scraper rings to finally sort out the issue on the production line. I see that a German engineering firm say that they will rebuild engines with a piston designed and built to their own specs, others offer a different oil scraper ring .... but surely Audi must have sorted this in house from a certain date? Surely there must be a new piston design explained and evidenced?
