Transverse engine fitted longitudinally

As the title says can a transverse engine be fitted longitudinally? 

I'm still struggling to get the A6 back on the road, and obviously considering other engines than Audi. 

As you know I've considered everything from longitudinal v8s thought to i4 engines from Isuzu 2.8 or land rover 200/300tdi. 

But also wondering if a 2ar-fxe Toyota engine and gearbox from a MK4 Toyota RAV4. This engine is transverse but wondering if it or any other transverse engine would fit?
