Quick update.  As advised by the dealer. Switching the Drive select from Automatic to Dynamic has not worked around the engine cut-out issue.  My A3 still occasionally cuts out went slowing to junctions and lights.

The stop/start is still working after the battery was changed

No, I didn't think that would work. We've tried Efficiency, comfort, auto and dynamic...the cut outs happen in all modes

  • Hello, I have a 24 plate 1.5 tfsi sport Q2 and have the same or very nearly the same experience,I’ve owned the car 5 months and my wife and I have both had this while driving as you say approach

  • Hello, yes this message “Drive system please start manually” —  I’ve just been reading owners manual page 90 - 91 the pages relate to start/stop system and it’s referring to certain conditio

  • Interesting.  Let’s see what they say on Wednesday.

The longer I have this car, the more I detest it! I now have a situation where the radio is constantly initialising, so wont play. I also have a new red warning lamp/message? that has appeared in the top right of the mmi, which I cant find in the manual. Ive attached a picture of it, so if anyone has any ideas on what it is, please enlighten me. Its the 90degree bent arrow I'm referring to.

I found out that the red arrow in the above picture seemingly is a missed call notification. Who knew?!

Have you just accepted nothing can be done?  It’s  really going to be a waste of time taking it back up to Newcastle Audi as it is impossible to reproduce the fault and Audi seem to be of no help.  They seem to be in denial.

Got exactly the same reply from Poole Audi, they even deny that there is an update and refuse to do it. Just say bring it back in when it does it again, but as it is intermittent you can’t. Really f**king unhelpful.

Mine is going in on Thursday to have the engine cut outs investigated. If, as I suspect, they give me the same flannel that everyone else whose had this problem gets, and say that theres no fault, then if its not a fault, it must be happening by design. That being the case they will need to explain to me how, why and under what contitions is it ok for the car to switch the engine off requiring a manual restart.

Are you talking about an update that addresses the engine cut outs?

Yes, but they say there isn’t one but just google 1:5 tsfi manual engine cutting out and up it pops.

My car cut out again yesterday during a right turn.  Fortunately the road was quiet.  Rang Newcastle Audi and they advised me to drive with the stop start turned off and see if that prevents the engine cut out issue . I asked if I was on the most up to date version of engine management software and was told I was.  Someone is eventually going to be involved in an accident, then they may eventually take it seriously and get it fixed.

OK, car was in at the main dealer in Stirling today to have the engine cut outs investigated. Guess what? They couldn't reproduce the phenomina, and as there were no fault codes, there was nothing they could do. Shockeroonie!!

I had also asked them to investigate why my auto stop/start seemed to have stopped working, and why the radio regularly got stuck in an "initialising" loop which made it unusable. They told me the battery was only 60% charged, and this was most likely why the auto stop/start had stopped working. They have charged the battery to 80% and said the auto start stop was now working. However on my drive from the garage to home, some 12 miles, it didn't operate once. And when I asked the service adviser, given how low my annual mileage is, and the fact that it mainly consists of short journeys, how often should I put the battery on charge at home? I was informed that there is no need to charge the battery at home. Err..surely the fact the battery was only at 60% and the auto stop/start wasn't working would fly in the face of that particular observation!

Regarding the radio initialising doom loop, they told me that Audi are aware of the issue, and a software fix is expected next year. All owners who have reported this issue to a main dealer will be advised when the fix is available and called in to have it implemented.

So that's where I am as of today. I have decided to ignore the advice about not needing to charge the battery at home, and I currently have it on charge with a CTEK-CT5 Stop/Start charger.

My battery has the exact same issue.  They asked I left the car overnight so they could charge it but next day after a second test drive found the battery was back to 60%.l

After another 2 days off the road and more tests Audi approved a replacement battery under warranty.  Car is just one year old and 10000 miles.

re the radio.  I rejected my first Car because of radio issues and had it replaced with the current car.

I'm currently trying to get in touch with an Audi specialist outside of the main dealer network to see if they have any insights into the engine cut out issue. I'll keep you all updated.

As requested by Newcastle Audi.  I drove the car with the stop start turned off.  Yesterday the engine cut out while slowing to turn left and with stop start turned off.

Really must find a fix for this issue.

Reading thru the posts a common thread is that most cut outs appear to be when slowing down and turning and a general poor state of battery. If any members are electrically minded it would be interesting to monitor the amperage draw/spike as a slowing alternator with electrical steering input and batteries that don’t seem to ever fully charge for some reason could result in a shut down especially if it’s a result of poor ecu parameters. Just a thought as feel for you all

Interesting thought but mine has just had a new battery fitted to fix the stop start which still seems to be working suggesting battery is fine.

Also my A3 has cut out when just approaching traffic lights without any steering.

Perhaps my driving style is not compatible with this particular engine.  Wish I could figure out how to reproduce the fault.  Seem to happen when I approach a junction at a slightly higher speed.

Fair points.

when it cuts out if you  press the clutch and wait a few seconds does the car restart as thou its been a stall as my A4 will restart itself without me touching anything else.

No.  With this particular cut out the ignition stays on I have to switch off the ignition then then manually restart.  If I ever do stall the car from a standstill dipping the clutch does restart the engine.  I did wonder if it’s linked the the fuel saving feature when the car shuts down 2 cylinders. It’s as though all 4 shut down

I spoke to an Audi specialist in Glasgow, who is not part of the main dealer network. They have not encountered this engine cutouts problem, and said that to investigate it, they would need to reproduce the phenomena and/or have fault codes associated with it. So pretty much the same as the main dealers are saying which unfortunately is no help whatsoever!

My auto stop/start is now working normally after the garage charged the battery from 60% to 80% and I then fully charged it at home. I am going to drive the car with the start/stop active, and my wife is going to drive the car with it disengaged.

I've now contacted the BBC Watchdog program to see if they will take an interest in this issue.

I think, like I did, you probably have a faulty battery.  If the stop start stops working again get them to replace the battery
