What mileage are A6’s doing on brakes pads before changing

Featured Replies

Hi just wondering what mileage people are going before having to go and change discs and pads ?

Mileage will be the largest contributor, but age, weather, and typical commute will take its toll. Give you an example, my wife’s i3 REx has regenerative braking, so the discs or pads are hardly used. That said we live in Scotland, so the discs take a beating with road salt. I’ve changed them twice (2015 build) with Textar (BMW OE). Car on 90k miles. Good opportunity to strip down brake sliders, check rubber dust boots, ceramic paste on pad backs, etc

On a 2020 A6 it would be worth a brake strip down even if the pads and discs look fine. You’ll need VCDS for rear electro mechanical handbrake. Will be due brake fluid change too. If discs have a lip, then they will be due. Any scoring too.

Front brake carrier bolts are known to seize. Not unique to A6, on A4 platform too due to oxide corrosion.

I was checking out my rear brakes yesterday after replacing my A6’s rear spring mount that had the typical corrosions.
My cars done 32k and are down to about 4mm , discs are lipped too so maybe their ready for changing

Funny enough it was reading your post on Audi sport forum about changing corroded rear spring mounts that made my mind up about doing it myself instead of paying Audi’s £320

How did you get on with the rear spring mount? I did it on B8 and was a lot simpler than B9. They tend to go every 3-4 years. Leave it and you risk breaking a spring.

Regards discs - if its got a lip, then yes, I would say it's worth changing discs and pads too. At the end of the day the A6 isn't lightweight, so it's all relative. Depends what was on from new. I don't rate Brembo any more - so fitted Zimmermann.

Thanks Mick,

Your question would be very difficult to answer, if only from the point that everyone’s driving styles differ - light anticipated slow down to last minute ‘on the brakes’ for example.

4mm thick pads are due for renewal fairly shortly. I would agree that if you can see a lip on the discs then it’s worth renewing them as well, particularly since you have to factor in what they will be like in another 32k worth of wear.
Discs and pads to use?? Opinions differ, but I have been using Brembo to good effect on a family member’s non-Audi - in fact better than manufacturer’s ones. Just bought Brembo rear discs and pads for my non- Audi.
No connection, but I buy most of my parts from Parts in Motion, usually via. their EBay listings. Last day today for their extra 20% off already competitive prices.

Kind regards,

Gareth.

Yeah the spring mounts took about 2.5 hours to do both sides,  just dropped the shock bottom bolt off and used a set of spring compressor's and  a little help from a bottle jack and extension tube pushing off the top shock mount pushing the to push the suspension down wards.

I have been  looking getting brakes from LLL parts have anyone used them ?

Not used LLL Parts, but useful for part numbers. Used Autodoc. Allow at least 10 days for delivery.

Hello Mick,

I usually buy from Parts in Motion, and have found their prices to be competitive and their service second to none.

I don’t have any connection with the company.

Perhaps you could let us know what the comparative value prices are from the suppliers eventually tried.

Kind regards,

Gareth.

Audi want £777 for fitting rear discs and pads and £854  which is expensive I think

audi parts are about £550 for rears and the same on the front  so just doing a bit of digging at the minute.

This is how Audi main dealers make quite exorbitant profits on essential service items. There is a case, assuming you’re not spanner handy to put it to an independent garage that you trust. On a 4 year old car, then the caliper and associated bolts will be easy to work on. Would expect 3 hours all in.

Audi won’t make the physical parts. BMW for example use Textar, chances are Audi use ATE and TRW.

If it has to be OE, then TPS which supply the dealer would be able to supply the independent garage.

Hi all, I'm thinking of changing the discs and pads all round on my 2019 55tfsi a6.  Audi quoted just over 2k.

I'm after the best quality product, would that be OEM via TPS or some other brand such as Brembo or Zimmerman?

Cheers

£2k, what are they doing, booking you an overnight stay and dinner at the Savoy? Granted 55TFSI is 340hp, but my suggestion is shop around. You should be able to get decent parts and a full brake inspection for less. Worth doing brake fluid change too, due every 2 years.

Does anyone know if I can replace my standard 55tfsi discs and pads with RSQ3 discs and pads?

I like the red RS calipers that come on the RSQ3 setup with the drilled discs.  I'm a little heavy footed and I'm going on a Black Forest run soon so I'd like some performance breaking.

Appreciate any advice, thanks in advance

I’m about to do my fronts and backs on A6 C8. Bought Brembo. Check gsf site and Euro parts. See the you tube on internet. Not difficult if you do diy mechanic. Save enough to have a nice holiday for two👍😆

Hi

Ended up doing disc’s the pads front and rear’s on my A6 C8 last month as I didn’t want to be doing them over winter before the MOT in March.
Managed the get genuine front discs for £200 the pair but had to get the rears from the dealer , replaced all the caliper bolts too,  reused the wear sensors too as the front were just about to touch but hadn’t so bonus saving a few more bucks in the end saved about £1000 doing the myself and not the dealer

below a pic of the front pads with wear sensor , in my opinion it wasn’t worth waiting a few more months and working in the cold weather

Hi thats not bad for rears, the car is very heavy so they do tend to suffer with shorter change intervals than say a Ford/peugeot which are lighter, just changed the front discs and pads on my Passat but only changed the pads on the rear, just discovered Meyle discs for the front and used Delphi pads which are O.E. so I will see how they go, had Brembo discs and pads originally and they did 42k which is not bad considering the milage I do [cab] and the hot summer which tears up brakes on stop start driving, unless you have already done it a brake fluid change wont hurt.

Steve.

Mine needed changing at 43000. Audi quoted £2000 for front and rear pads and discs.

My local trusted garage had a look, discs were still ok so replaced it with OEM parts for a total cost £283.
