Hi, I get this noise when turning full lock. It is the easiest to hear when turning left but it also happens when turning to right but quieter. Is it normal or what it can be? Happens only above 12 km/h. Imgur: The magic of the Internet

It's electric power steering.

On full lock it will need a bypass system and the humming noise may well be the bypass in operation. Our VW has an electric PS pump and it does make a noise on full lock.

What do you mean by "bypass system"? You think this is normal? What Volkswagen is that - model and year? And also I see you have an S3 from 2018 - does it have the same noise? Thanks for the info.

Hi - We also have an 2019 A3. I've just checked both cars and no noise comes on full lock steering at slow speed. Apologies as it looks like the steering is an electro mechanical one, so no hydraulics with bypass involved. Some cars have an hydraulic electric pump which make the humming noise. I'll get back in my box.

You have to drive at least 12 km/h or 8 mph. Have you checked at this speed?

And you said your Volkswagen makes a noise at full lock with electric power steering. What noise is that? Similar to this one? And what Volkswagen is that?

Yes, I was slow in both cars and no noise. The VW is a polo but that is an electric hydraulic pump so is a different system to the S3/A3. I'm out in the S3 tomorrow so can check when its cold, but I've never noticed anything and I usually notice anything untoward.

Ok, so check again if you can. I would be grateful. Full left turn and make circles. Make sure you have at least 12 km/h or 8 mph. Also - what tires do u have in A3 and S3? Model and size.

A whine at full lock that was not previously there could either be a drop in fluid level or steering pump nearing the end of it life but you should avoid holding a hydraulic steering system at full lock as it puts a lot of strain on the pump
