Can I code a non AGM battery to my stop start A3?

Featured Replies

Just wondering if I can use a non AGM battery to the car?

I need a new battery and I’m working abroad for 2 months. I don’t want to spend £130 and then have a diff battery while I’ve been abroad.  I’ve read that AGM batteries need to be kept on charge. I could take the battery out and leave it on a maintenance charge?

I don’t think I can code a non AGM battery? I know I can change the charging settings on the car.

Thanks.

I am puzzled. Why would you want a different battery when taking the car abroad?

As for "I’ve read that AGM batteries need to be kept on charge." that is absolute nonsense. You treat an AGM battery the same as any other car battery.

I think James means he's going abroad and leaving the car at home unused for 2 months. But you're right about AGM batteries, you treat them like any other car battery.

Ah, it seems I misunderstood. Sorry.

If it is correct James that you are leaving the car at home while you are abroad why not just leave the old battery in the car until you return, and then renew it? If you are going to renew it anyway it does not matter if it discharges while you are away. Or have I still not understood the situation? Some more detail would help.

AGM battery has to be charged by driving at least half an hour every day. This is what the AA told me when I called them out after cutting out. A1 was not used while I was away on holiday, Was also told that the start go should not be used in city traffic as this affects the charging.

That means you have a defective battery. In normal circumstances you should treat an AGM battery the same as any other type of battery.

City traffic is exactly when the stop/start function is designed to be used. If your battery can not support that sort of use then it is defective.
