S5 B10 Avant HUD Issue

Featured Replies

Having had the car a few months the HUD stopped displaying. Took it to my local Dealer where they could find no reason for the issue and only a non descriptive fault in the code log. Following a reset the HUD functioned for about a month before going off again. Back to Audi and they elected this time to replace the control module. Fingers crossed this has fixed it. New car glitches. It has also pinged drive assist errors which is down to a know SW issue that there is no fix for at this time. Waiting on a SW release and another trip to Audi and until then a stop start of the engine gets it out of limp mode. Last observation is that the passenger screen runs quite hot. I had a loan A5 with same screen and this was very warm to touch when in use too so most likely a "feature". Although it is getting sorted it is irritating that there is no compensation for time and miles spent going to and from the Dealer. But.... the loaner A5 Avant was a 2 litre TSFi. Was not expecting fireworks from under the bonnet but when it only returned 35 MPG I was cheered up some knowing my S5 can match it for economy  and my decision to go for the S is still a good one.

That's poor. To be honest there shouldn't be software issues or things like HUD overheating. Audi, I'm sure like many manufacturers are quick to push new tech to market, but it needs to go through due diligence in terms of testing. Luckily you're under warranty - but if it were me, I'd speak to service manager to express your worries and see if they can wangle in a free oil change or such like.

My stance has been passive this far - The HUD was a HW issue in the end. The screen seems to run hot, like in the loaner, but the suspension faults are waiting on a SW update which cannot be done over the air so I will be back in for more coffee and biscuits one day soon. I was expecting niggles, this is a brand new model and the Tech it is loaded with will always have risks but, as you noted, I have 3 years Warranty for peace of mind but 40 miles of motoring, the time off work and the time without the car helps me build a case for freebies or discounts down the line. If it is one blessing, the car gets a valet on every visit. And having the 2.0 TFSi A5 gave me the opportunity to confirm that although a little rash, the S5 offers so much more with little sacrifice on economy. I am at that stage of life where I am old enough to afford one and still young enough to enjoy it.

I realise this thread is 6mths old now but...

Hopefully your HUD is now sorted, but was just wondering if a software update sorted your driver assist issues?

I've recently picked up an A5 and only two journeys thus far have gone error free, it's mostly down to driver assist related issues. The only other A5 I've driven, the car I test drove, also came up with a weird assist error - seatbelt must be fastened before cruise control could be activated.

Just wondering if Audi still have ongoing software issues? I'm led to believe my car had the latest software downloaded prior to delivery.

Hi, Sorry for the lack of an update - have not been out in car that much since the "operation".

I have not had any (Fingers crossed) Stability Control alerts since the update. It seems to have fixed all the false alarming including TPMS etc.

I do get some warnings regarding driver assist, collision avoidance and auto headlights when setting off at times but I put this sown to frost or debris on the array of camera and sensors. I should clean the car more often.

The nearside blind spot monitoring still flashes away at anything more than a kerb but that is not a key issue to me.

Last issue I have, which I put down to the HUD work is that one of the ambient LED sections shows a different colour to the rest if different colours are set for top and bottom zones. I have a theory that this is down to when the dash board was removed for the HUD control module change. This can wait for when its convenient to drop car back at Bath Audi again.

Thanks for the update.

I've had similar assist systems in VW group cars and I'm familiar with how they work, when they work and probably more importantly, the reason why they don't work at times, but this Audi is doing my head in. With Active cruise, you'd have more chance winning the lottery than guess when it's going to work properly. No two journeys are alike in my car, which at least makes things interesting.

It's come up with a list of failures, all which point at the camera as being the common denominator ( no ostructions on the windscreen ) but then I have other assist systems kick in for no reason such as rear traffic alert which will bring the car to an abrupt halt when it's self parking. Occasionally when it does fail to park, it'll tell me the handbrake has failed and it may be in danger of rolling away if I take my foot off the brake pedal. I'm terrified of parking on a hill now. It's also happened more than once that when after overtaking a car, when I indicate to move back to the inside lane, lane assist appears to ignore the indicator and tries keeping me in the fast lane. I thought it was only Audi drivers who ignore indicators?

I'll see what the Audi service says tomorrow.

The other thing that's annoying and rather embarassing, is especially when the car is self parking, the brakes give off this loud squeak as they slowly release and the car tries to move. You get people looking at you. I've seen a few videos online and those cars do exactly the same, only not as loud as mine. I've had both a SEAT and a SKODA have their brake pads replaced within the first month of ownership due to them squeeling whilst reversing, so hopefully it's just a typical poor quality batch of VW components. Speaking of which, my last car required it's rear discs replaced after just 13k miles. This was put down to the car being stationary for long periods and the parking brake being on. They recommended that on flat ground, I leave the car in the 'P' park gear and leave the electronic parking brake off.  I haven't yet quite figured out how to do this on these simple button gearboxes. There seems to be a long winded way of releasing the electronic parking brake whilst parked up ( saw it in some menu ) but don't know if the gear has 'P' park functionality when the engine is off or it defaults to 'N' neutral.

I think touchscreens, assistance systems and flick switch gearboxes are there just to make me feel old. 😀

I'll update my issue incase anyone comes searching with similar symptoms.

1. The brakes were sticking on my car. That was resolved, but there's still a noise (see below)

2. Don't know what Audi service did, software update I think, but the ACC has worked flawlessly since it was returned.

3. A fault with the rear-cross traffic detection system was registered when they ran diagnostics. A replacement part was ordered and although I've only tried the auto park system twice since, it work 100% both times. That's two times more than it's ever done. I count that as a success.

When the car releases the brake itself during the auto park manoeuvre, (it does it really slowly) the brakes still make a squeal noise albeit not nearly as bad as before. If I was a betting man, I'd guess this is more to do with the questionable quality of VW group brake pads and / or discs.  Not sure if it's mentioned within the Audi community, but with Skoda, Seat and VW, a common problem is premature rear brake wear. It's put down to the car being parked up for lengths of time with the park brake on.  I've been very lucky over the years but the rear brakes / discs on my last car had to be changed after only 13k miles (car failed it's MOT because of it). I swapped them out for Bosch parts rather than have OEM fitted again - never had an issue after that, the brakes were silent. The quality of OEM VW discs and pads is questionable, some people liking them to being made from cheese.

My HUD failed on day 6, October 2025 delivery so running KD2 software from new. After several trips to the dealer, they say they need to wait for KD3 update as its a software issue. Managed to get a £2k good will gesture (free tracker, free services, free functions on demand) but cheesed off that a £73K car should suffer this sort of problem.

On the plus side, no other faults to note. A couple of odd alarms but all cleared within seconds of activation. Now that its run in, it really is a nice place to be.

I've read horror stories about some owners experience but, HUD aside, I'm very happy.
