Oil and Inspection Service with a Pollen Filter - what is in

Featured Replies

Hi Folks

Not been on for a while!

So my 2017 A3 8v is due service/MOT in December and I have been recommended the above service

for the grand price of £450

So what I want to know is , apart from oil/filter change + pollen , what exactly am I getting for my money?

OK I know Audi=expensive but I would not want to be "rinsed" for a lot of "inspections" which are not that necessary

or that I can do myself?

The car has only done 14K since new since my retirement and I just wonder if I should have the cheaper oil/filter change?

Opinions welcome

Hi absolutely sod all else, for that sort of money at an independent garage you wold get, oil/filter, pollen and air filter, what you are being charged for is some Wassoc to wander around underneath with a torch and a phone camera trying to find the smallest excuse to generate more overpriced work, when you look on this forum there are loads of people who have been told by Audi that this bush is gone that needs changing, the best one ever on another forum was your brake pads need changing because they are 50% worn, when are people going to wake up to the fact that full Audi service history is not worth a cup of cold goats urine, better an honest independent that values your custom.

Steve.

Hello Harry,

I think equally important is what servicing has been carried out on the car during its 8 years and 14k miles with you. Perhaps you could let us know.

I’m in complete agreement with Stevey Y, and my rule of thumb is once the car is out of warranty, it’s maintenance is only carried out at garages where you can actually talk with the mechanics/ proprietors rather than service receptionists.
Sorry to point out, but any car which covers the annual mileage that you do <2k/a has had an hard life, with stop/starts, probably not getting fully up to temperature etc. etc.

Respect should be paid to this and the car deserves at least an annual oil and filter changed.

Not sure if yours is running on a cambelt as opposed to chain, but if so, I would strongly advise this is renewed sooner than later.
Regards,

Gareth.

Hi Stevey

Yep just what I suspected - I had to check I heard right when quoted £450 for oil+pollen + a "walk around"  FFS!!

Is there somewhere on this forum where I can get recommended independents in my area?

thanks again

Hi Magnet

Thanks for the info

So , the car has been serviced by Audi Ayr since new , but here is a funny story ; when I researched the service schedule I misunderstood the blurb and thought you had to have the car serviced every 2 years!

So I had the service every 2 years until about 4 years ago when someone explained the actual interval and then it was serviced yearly plus MOT since

Yes I do realise the low mileage can be a problem - until about 6 months ago it was used maybe once a month + the trip to the folks c500mi return + a holiday of c1000mi  but recently I am using it every Wed on a local trip!

It does get up to temp on these runs

Totally agree re oil change and I do get this done

I have used A for Audi in Glasgow but it is an hours drive away and I worry if any MOT work is necessary it involves a bit of faff

thats why I would welcome a recommendation of a local Ayrshire garage?

Harry

Quick PS - Had a lucky break last year - drove to W Yorks and the "gearbox fail warning" light came on

Thought it was false but took it to Audi Huddersfield and NO it was real!

LUCKILY it was a manufacturing fault (well known - cant remember the code) and was fixed for free

(otherwise a 4K repair!)

Not really. You need to search for yourself. Independant VAG specialists should have access to appropriate equipment and diagnostic tools to cater for all problems.

Hi

thanks yes I will do a search for local independants

Pointless using Audi main dealer on an 8 year old car. First off you’re paying around £180 an hour labour, then overpriced Audi branded parts. Chances are the oil and cabin filter are made by Mann which are OE. Oil is probably Quantum, but I use Castrol Edge. Incidentally you can get charcoal activated cabin filter over basic version. Secondly, when you come to ever sell the car, then full history is just a tick box. I do my own servicing, so when I sold an immaculate VW Polo (daily runner) a few years back to webuyanycar, they class it as part history, although every receipt for servicing was in a folder. A trusted Indy can service it and flag if there are any issues.
