Navigation fails to initialise (2020 A3 e-tron 8v)

Featured Replies

New here and want to acknowledge the new members advise of post and run...I'm here and very grateful for the advice, and certainly not looking to splash and dash.

I've been having an issue with the Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) system on my 2020 Audi A3 e-tron (8V). After a few minutes of driving, a warning appears:
Traffic Sign Recognition Limited. See owner’s manual for details.

When this first happened, the car was still under extended warranty, so I had Audi inspect it. They said my windscreen wasn’t OEM and that the camera bracket was broken slightly, causing the camera to be a little loose. Their theory was that the loose camera might be sending unstable data, confusing the TSR system, or that the non-OEM windscreen might require an ADAS calibration.

However, the TSR system still recognises signs; it just reports limited functionality. I also doubt the windscreen is the root cause, since the TSR worked fine when I bought the car in 2023 and the windscreen hasn’t been replaced since.

Around the same time, I noticed my navigation system would hang at 11% while loading and never complete/load. I started to suspect the two issues might be related. The TSR system probably uses both the camera and navigation data to confirm speed limits. If it’s only getting input from one source, that could explain the 'Limited' warning.

I took it for a diagnostic scan, which reported a low 12V battery and couldn’t complete a full check. Thinking this might be voltage-related, they recommended I replace the battery with a higher-spec one, which I did and coded it to the car, but the issue persists.

I also downloaded the latest official Audi map update (0230002C) and verified I had the activation key, but the update won’t install, whether via USB, SD card, or Online. It just says 'No relevant data found on the medium' for USB or SD, or gets to 80% and doesn't complete if updating Online, in the vehicle.

At this point, I suspect it’s primarily a navigation system issue. I think I need to fix that first, then if the TSR issue remains, ADAS calibration.

If anyone has insights or suggestions, I’d really appreciate it.

I seem to recall many similar or related problems to recent models reported in these forums, so it would be worth spending an hour reading them. I know that's not much help, however my car precedes such electrickery so I did not take a lot of notice and can not point you directly at the appropriate topics.

Thanks, Cliff. Good shout. I'll dig through and see if I can find anything.

Electrickery, indeed. Unfortunately, this vehicle has not been the shining example of an Audi for those very reasons.
