Oil pressure modification?

Featured Replies

Hi, new member here.  I have a 2017 Allroad with the 272bhp diesel engine. I have seen a few things online about a mod that can be made to increase oil pressure in the engine to reduce chances of excess wear and damage. I’m looking for views on whether this is a good idea. The car has 80k miles, full Audi service history (tho planning to use independent for next service). The car is driven mostly on motorways and country A roads.  All thoughts and views gratefully received. Thanks.

I have the same model. Not heard of this modification. I change oil and filter every 5k miles using Castrol edge 5w30 (don’t use a flush). I also had Triptronic gear box serviced at 65k miles. Other than that, add Forte anti-crystal to AdBlue during 8 litre top-ups and run on premium diesel. Fuel filter every 20k miles. Air and pollen every 10k miles. Mann parts are OE. I have VCDS so can scan for codes, etc.

That's not something I have heard of. Would you care to provide some links for the modifications?

As far as I can see on Euro 6, 3.0 litre engines they use variable oil pressure, so uses lower pressure at lower RPM, to reduce emissions. I think it’s more of an issue on cars modified to stage 1 or 2, so ECU map would need to be adjusted. My view is getting car to operating  temperature and use low revs, then you can open it up. That and renew oil regularly of course.

On 18k oil change intervals which is madness, the oil has lost its viscosity after approximately 10k miles. Damage is done and it’s usually owners down the line that will deal with the issues. Oil comes out like water at service, so I’d choose to renew 5-8k miles.

Thanks, that's it. It's an ECU remap that is sometimes done with stage 1 or stage 2 modification. I saw it on a YT video which I can't  find now!  They said the lower oil pressure was for better mpg and reduced emissions. But the reduced pressure at low revs combined with the 18k interval risked damaging timing chain gear. I think it was a Q7 that needed a very expensive rebuild. I was a bit spooked and wondered whether I should get the oil pressure increase mod done on its own. But I'm thinking your solution of increasing  the frequency of oil changes makes more sense. I could get a fair few oil changes for the price of a remap.

Indeed. I thought about a stage 1 remap, but to be honest I’ve plenty power, and I’m returning over 50mpg on the motorway, so leaving as is.
