Oil filter O-rings

Featured Replies

I picked up an oil filter kit that came with two O rings, one larger and one smaller. I know the larger O ring is for the oil filter housing, but I am not sure where the smaller one goes.

My oil filter is accessed from underneath the car. Is the smaller O ring meant for a different style of housing or a different engine setup, or is there another place it is supposed to be used on this type of filter?

Just want to make sure I am not missing anything before putting it back together. Thanks in advance.

Hi it depends what type of filter housing you have if the new filter just plugs into the cap without a plastic tower running through the middle you wont need the smaller o ring.

Thanks, I thought that might be the case. I always panic when I have bits left over! 😊

Hi dont sweat it you will find this with a lot of parts especially brakes where you get a spare wear sensor to cater for models with a twin sensor axle but you have the plug and sod all one side to connect it to.

Obviously you will have changed oil and filter by now, but for next time check your oil filter housing for a drain plug. My 1.6 TDI  which is changed from under neath the car has a drain plug that can be removed to drain oil before unscrewing housing. Avoids oil spillage and gives you a home for that small O ring 😀
