What is this?

I found this loose on top of my engine, near the back (towards the windscreen).  Any idea what it is and where it should have been?  It's about the size of my thumbnail 1-2cm diameter.  It's rubber.

I'm afraid not.  It's got strangely discoloured and disfigured since I took the first. pic a week ago.

Do you happen to have a good photo of the underside of the A5 (2011 model) removable engine cover?   I would be interested to see whether mine has all the required 'grommets' on it.

Thanks

I like the whole of your answer, except for one tiny bit - the question mark! 🙂
That was our guess too, but I need proof, just in case it has come off of something more serious.

The guy at the garage did not know what it was, but was happy to order another one, like the others.  This one is different from the others.

I wish I knew if something was missing.

I was hoping someone on this forum with a 2011 A5 would be able to send me a photo of the underside of the cover so that I can see how mine should look; then I will know.

I didn't realise this would be such a difficult question! 🙂

It's a tricky question if no one has seen the part before. Especially something bso small it would be easily missed by most. I wonder if it's a gromet holding the bonnet insulation in place?

Or a gromet to fit somewhere near the bulkhead?

My suspicion is that there will be lots of them somewhere in the engine bay, like the bulkhead area etc.
