1st gear judder

Featured Replies

Has anyone had any issues regarding 1st gear judder at low revs. No other judder in any other gear car drives fine. Just when pulling away slowly in traffic, if I give it some revs theres no judder. Any advice much appreciated.

What engine? What fuel? What transmission? Give us a clue Martin.

🤦‍♂️ 1.9 diesel and manual

Hello Martyn,

What you describe sounds very much like clutch judder, and is experienced in first gear only, since you understandably only start off in first.

Test:- worse if starting off on a hill? Less severe (almost disappears) when starting off down hill?

If so, this is not an uncommon issue, as clutch parts wear - particularly the potentially problematic slave cylinder/release bearing.
Perhaps you could let us have the additional information requested, and we can comment further.
Kind regards,

Gareth.

For clarification Martin, is the juddering when you are slipping the clutch, during take off for example, or when it is fully engaged? If the former I agree with Gareth; if the latter something else is wrong.

Hi possibly the dual mass flywheel is worn so at low revs the drive surface will wobble about when the friction plate hits the flywheel if you increase the revs on take off this masks the wear as the torque and extra revs make the flywheel travel faster in the drive direction and take up the slack caused by wear.
