Engine Light with Error code P2196

Afternoon, 

I've got an RS6 C7, recently bought. The engine light has come on (yellow) and the OBD shows error code P2196. It's the second time it's appeared both times after filling the car with fuel. I understand that it could be caused by an 02 sensor. I reset it to see it would come on again. Car ran 350-400 miles, I refuelled it and it's come back on again. Anyone come across this?

Not yet, wasn’t confident to just change it without some opinion on whether that was the best place to start. It’s under Warranty too, though I’m guessing a sensor is non-mechanical.

Hello Greg,

If the car is under someone’s warranty, then I wouldn’t be taking on any responsibility for (messing around) trying to diagnose or fix anything if it were mine. You make it easy for them to counter  claim you may have influenced the issue.

If you've cleared the code a d then the same code has come back then I'd be confident to say change the sensor. If it still comes on after the sensor has been changed then further diagnosis will be required

Think I’m with you in this. Was double checking myself as I’d read it was a regular occurrence with the C7

Yep that’s what I’d been made to understand. Will take it and see what comes back from the investigation.

Again, is there much noticeable  difference between unleaded and premium unleaded for day to day driving?

Hi there is miles of difference between the two, try a tank of Shell V Power and enjoy the non surgical smile it produces, the alternative [cheaper] is use an Octane booster Hydra and Archoil do some really good versions.

Funnily enough having dropped that into conversation and went onto read more about it and apparently soo! In summary it appears, keep away from BP Ultimate, and it’s between Tesco Momentun and Shell V Power. Not heard about the boosters but will do some reading this eve.

Check your fuel trims on a diagnostic scanner and see if they are off (outside of +5% and -5% tolerance) indicator number 1, then secondly check the voltage on the sensors with the same scanner as the car i running and if the voltage is not fluctuating thats a secondary give away that a sensor is faulty

As it was still under warranty I took it in and they’ve confirmed it was the sensor. And it’s covered 👍

So awaiting for them to get a new one in stock. Funnily enough, since I switched to Premium Unleaded (one fill with Shell and next with Tesco). The light hasn’t come up since. Oh well, new sensor coming.

I did mention fuel associated Greg. New sensor to be fitted. Question what make sensor is going to be fitted, or you could end up worse off. There are some pretty dodgy sensors available.

You did, may have been spot on. I’ll check. It’s through Audi, so you’d expect it would be good, but never assume. I’ll ask when they get it in before they put it in.

Hi it will only be a Bosch sensor as thats what it was fitted with, steer clear of the new E10 fuel as that murders the sensor, recently fitted two sensors one after the other to a Peugeot these were Denso which are pretty good but were annihilated about a month after fitting, finally cracked it when I asked which fuel he used and the answer was, the new stuff so now his using the old standard fuel and its been fine for the last three months

The E10 fuel is a nightmare. I'm convinced it's designed to kill cars deliberately. Let's face it it can't be for emissions like they claim because all cars get less mpg now! 

is the E10 in the UK a bio ethanol mix of 10 or what way do you guys do it over there? i remember we used to have E5 petrol here around 15 years ago and it was great for Jap cars as it brought up the octane rating but it was bad for the euro cars even back then especially BMW's
