Engine labors on initial start up

Hi,

I have an Audi 1.6 TDI Ultra 2015 and only over the last 5 weeks, now it's starting to get colder I am getting an issue on start up the engin labors, when starting to drive it would judder and when giving it more acceleration it would then, drive fine with no further issues.

I took it to the dealer who put it on the diagnostic but changed the oil and fuel filters. I have seen a big difference with the judder as that is not as bad, but the laboring is still a big problem, only now when I start up in the morning it still labors but if I give it a few revs it is then fine and have no further issues with it. Suggestion from the dealer is take it back and it can go on the diagnostic, could do run cleaner though it with a magnet to see if there are any metal shavings, if so will need a new fuel system. I am really desperate to get this fixed any ideas

Deborah.

Firstly thanks for starting a new topic. I have hidden our contributions to the other one.

It sound as if your dealer has no clue about engines or fault diagnosis. There is no way a new oil filter can affect how smoothly an engine runs, though a new fuel filter may well do. As for the idea of a magnet to extract metal shavings and a new fuel system, that is sheer nonsense. He is either ignorant or is deceiving you.

If you are reliant on a mechanic for the work rather than doing it yourself I strongly suggest you get a diagnosis from somebody who knows what he is doing. Main Audi dealers will be expensive, and it can be a lottery whether they can resolve the problem. A better choice would be an independent VAG garage or an independent diesel specialist if you find one nearby. I would not know of any in Hampshire so you will need to make your own search.

Hello Cliff,

Thank you for your feedback it is very much appreciated, as feel like I am expected to keep throwing money at it to find the cause.  I will go independent VAG as suggested and thank you for your advice.

Hello Deborah,

Apologies for jumping in on your thread, but it might be worth giving consideration to searching for a trusted diesel specialist in your area, as opposed to an independent Audi specialist.
As daft as it may sound, but you could have a chat to your local taxi chaps and ask them for recommendations, since they depend on good and fast service for their still-mainly- diesel engined models. I would talk to the drivers themselves rather than the office.
Good luck with it Deborah.

Kind regards,

Gareth.

Good evening,

Took the Audi to the specialist today, on the diagnostic and 10 to 15 minutes advised there was an error code and the issue is to do with the fuel sensor, apparently if it is a degree over then it over compensates the fuel causing the laboring and juddering at first start up, now just waiting on the outcome to fix as the technician wanted to research before calling with the final outcome. I am so greatful you suggested going to a specialist. I do find it odd though that the dealership never picked up on the error. I will check in again when know the final fix.

Kind Regards

Good morning,

Just to hpdate you following the research and because the error code gave 27277 System voltage

P0562 00 (062) - Too Low

Intermittent- Not Confirmed- Testest Since Memory Cleared

It was advised the first recommendation was the battery, so yest I invested in one which the specialist purchased, got it fitted and coded. Advised the current battery was 9years old, so could have been a factor. The test was if it would start the next day. Unfortunately same thing. So back to finding what's wrong.

I did have a question though when error print out said "Intermittent-Not Confirmed-Tested Since Last Memory Cleared" as the dealership was the only place I took it.

Sorry this was not a happy ending yet

Kind Regards

Deborah

It's unfortunate the problem has not been solved by a new battery Deborah. However the money was not wasted because old defective batteries are a well known cause of electronic problems. At nine years old yours has lasted far longer than most.

Hello Deborah,

I too am sorry that the issues continue, and that a new battery hasn’t been a proper fix, but has the new battery been coded to the car? What make is the new battery by the way?
Kind regards,

Gareth.

Good morning Cliff and Gareth,

Just want to say thank you for you advice on this topic, it really helped. I have made the decision to trade in the car as can't keep paying out, as getting one thing sorted leads onto still needing more work, so getting a new used car, and will be another Audi A3.

Again thank you both for your help and advice.

Have a great New Year

Kind Regards

Deborah

Hello Deborah,

I’m sorry to hear this hasn’t been sorted, and I can well understand your desire to now part with it, and get another A3.
I don’t want to come over as being intruding, but could I suggest the following as hopefully being helpful:-

Get your car valeted and presented at its best before introducing it into any part exchange deal.

Do all possible homework on any car of interest - before viewing  if possible.
View all confirming servicing evidence before committing.
Find out what the warranty doesn’t ( in caps) cover.
Check how long the previous owner has owned it - short term ownership may suggest it has issues.
ideally try to buy locally if possible.

If you have gone though those processes and you believe the car is of interest, then it would be well worth getting a local independent to carry out an inspection for you before committing.
Please come back to us at any stage, and if we can offer advice we would be pleased to do so.
Just let us know registration numbers and I’m sure we can do some homework for you.
Good luck with the search, and please let us know how you are getting on.
Wishing you and yours a Happy and healthy New Year.

Kind regards,

Gareth.

Good morning Cliff and Gareth,

Thank you both for your feedback.

Gareth, Thank you and yes, I think I have checked all your recommendations. I had a look at a few and found another A3, in Gillingham so not too far from Andover. On checking on DVLA nothing coming back to say it had any issues and MOT going back as far as 2020 shows passes every time. I have test drove it and it drives nice.  I made the deal and will be picking the car up on 6th Jan and already asked the specialist who I found in Andover who looked at my current car, to check it over. I checked DVLA and the car has now been MOTd as this was to be done with the service.

The car reg is FJ18VNL

Well done Deborah,

Sounds good. South coast car - ex Exeter.  Only two points I would mention:- guess you’ve checked out the service history recorded on the Audi database -? Car appears to have been in the same ownership since September 2020, which is fine, but it’s previous MOT expired 9 months ago, in March of this year. It confuses why it’s been kicking around for this time. Owner may have forgotten? But unlikely in these days of tax reminders etc.

AA Approved. Your best assessment of the car will be via. your independent.
Many thanks for letting us know.
Kind regards,

Gareth.

Hello Gareth,

Thank you and yes, and that's a question, as the garage said he only took ownership of the car six weeks prior to me viewing it on 18th December. I have already made arrangements with the independent specialist to give it the once over, so will let you know the outcome.

Kind Regards

Hello Deborah,

Any chance you might have been able to have had a glance of who the last registered owner was?
Kind regards,

Hello Gareth,

Thank you and noI don't know, I also have not got the car yet, as they are replacing the rear wiper motor as it stopped working so they ordered a new one and looks like Monday or Tuesday before I collect the car now, which was disappointing, I guess at least they found it and getting it replaced

Kind Regards
