I'm thinking of buying a 2001 or 2002 B6 A4 with either the 3.0L or 1.8T petrol engines and have two questions:

1) Is the Multitronic/CVT transmission an absolute dealbreaker?

2) I am now living in Sofia Bulgaria, where the streets are far worse than in the Gaza strip currently.  The potholes and bomb craters (?) are horrific. Is the A4 vulnerable to these due to the oil pan location/design? I've heard it's a weak point and I need a car that can absorb some tough conditions

A cvt that's not been well serviced could give you problems. 

With the road conditions you're describing it sounds like you need a high vehicle/4x4 ect.
