Matty's modified S6

Featured Replies

I am new to audi ownership, I found this audi s6 for sale pretty cheap. The main issue was the gearbox didn't drive, it had no interior, the wrong wheels and no exhaust. I bought it for the engine mainly. That idea changed once I saw the car, so now I'm putting it back on the road instead of scrapping the shell. The auto box has gone, it now has a manual box, I just need to sort out a clutch pedal and pipes. While I was searching for parts, I found some nicer wheels, I just need to sort out the rear suspension so I can fit the wheels without spacers.

This looks a great project, I'll be following this thread as I have a C5.

Keep us posted on how you get on

Which model c5 do you have. Once the rear end is cut and welded, I will update the progress.

The only progress this month is that the car has gone to the fabricators for some welding, hopefully I can then get rid of the spacers and fit the coilovers, the car sits too high as I have removed a lot of weight, the auto weighed a lot compared to the manual gearbox. I will update when the car comes back probably in july some time.

I came back from holiday and the car has come back from the fabricator, my only requirement was that I didn't want it to need spacers and now it doesnt. The wheels fit great, maybe a narrower tyre needed. I need to get it running again next, then fit the front coilovers.

I have got the car back from it's winter break, i hope to get it back on the road this summer. The clutch pedal box has been welded into the floor, I opted for a separate pedal rather than trying to change the pedal box from a manual c5. The clutch pipe needs fitting and the prop shaft needs fitting.

The centre diff has been welded so it should run rear wheel drive now.

The rear brakes will probably stay standard, the fronts are upgraded. I bought a pair of porsche 17z brembo calipers, but on trial fitting they don't fit with the wider s6 hubs and discs. I changed the wide track front hubs to the standard track front hubs from a seat exeo, with some mercedes c class 330mm discs and they all fit together fairly easily but i had to enlarge the mercedes disc centre and drill 14mm wheel bolt holes. The wheels will now need to be 10mm more offset, but I needed new ones anyway so no big issue.

The interior has come from a c5 allroad, so it now has door cards and seats.

I have added a rear spoiler, but nothing too major.

Pictures of progress will be added, once it's going back together.

The porsche calipers fit good, the front wheels have been ordered. The only issue is that I have had to fit the left on the right and right on the left, due to them coming from a porsche which had them at the front of the hub carrier.

Untill the new wheels arrive, I have put the old ones back on. I am undecided on the color, but the new wheels are bronze so the black calipers may look OK.

I have used the brembo 17z 6 piston ones, they bolt to the hub carrier but I had to use a 16.5mm drill on the old mounts, then a nut and bolt. I also had to change the bolt on bearing and hub as it is a wide track car, so I used standard bolt on audi a6 c5 parts. I used a Mercedes c class 330mm discs, but had to drill the wheel stud holes from 12mm to 14mm, also enlarge the centre hole a tiny bit. The brake hose will be probably for a porsche cayenne. I can imagine it being easier on a standard track c5, with bolt on bearing as that wouldn't need changing.

Ok, I'm on the final stretch, I can see the finish line ahead. Hopefully next Friday it can get an MOT. The final parts to complete are,

Plug the seats in and clear the Airbag light,

Plug the rear Abs sensors in and clear the Abs light,

Bolt the front bumper on,

Space the rear exhaust down a bit as the tailpipe trims are touching the bumper,

Re adjust the rear parking sensor wires as I cut through them when trimming the bumper,

Bolt the clutch reservoir to the bulkhead.

I will leave the audi r8 rear wheels as they are for now, I can get the new rears to match the fronts in the r8 fitment, it's just not needed for now. The exhaust seems to fit fine, it does sound nice too which was a bonus.

Cracking looking car and some serious work gone on there. Good luck with the mot.

Hopefully it is ok, my job is an MOT tester so I've built it as best I can to pass. I think the rear needs lowering an inch more, it was too low before but I raised it too much.

This looks stunning!

Thanks, it's been 2 1/2 years of parts sourcing, mostly VAG parts.

This thread acts as inspiration for my own A6 c5 rebuild.

The main thing is take time, don't rush any project.

MOT time tomorrow, hopefully it passes. The abs light has been fixed ( it helps if the sensors are plugged in ), the airbag light only goes out if i unplug the rear seat connector for some unknown reason, the engine light is on as both post cat sensors are in a box in storage ( but as its a pre july 2003 car its not part of the MOT test )

Hopefully the emissions are OK as its got aftermarket cats fitted.

The brake pedal has a travel as I've not bought the rs6 master cylinder yet.

The rear top mounts are bolted on, I just need to raise the front height an inch or two.

The MOT went well, it passed fine, now all I need to do is rebuild the interior and finish off the small bits like bolt the bumper on fully and tie up any wiring behind the bumper from the automatic transmission.
