Strange “problem” with the transmission box

Featured Replies

Happy New Year! I am the owner of an Audi A6 3.0 TDI 245HP S-LINE 2012, with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The car was imported from Italy, and I am the first owner since 265,000 kilometers. When it arrived, it was in terrible condition, and the repair costs were significant, but I fixed it.

The gearbox had never been serviced before. I replaced the flywheel completely, along with the clutch kit, because there was an issue when driving only in reverse. The car would stop, jerk, and make a grinding noise. After the repair and a gearbox update, it was fine for a month, but now the car jerks again (without grinding) only in reverse, and it sometimes displays a message on the dashboard:

“GEARBOX - please press brake pedal and select gear again.”

Sometimes, the issue doesn’t happen at all. I’ve driven in reverse for 1–2 minutes with no problem. I took the car for diagnostics, and they told me the “heart” of the gearbox (the software or something else) is failing, and I need to replace it. They mentioned it could still be driven until it completely stops working.

This sounds absurd to me, but I’ve booked an appointment with an Audi service center for a second opinion. What do you think? Please share any opinions, facts, or advice.

If the gearbox hasn't been serviced there could be something internally wrong with it.

The other thing that can go wrong is the megatronics unit but I don't think it'd be that in this case due to the gearbox oil not being changed but the previous owner etc.

I see.. So what’s the solution of the problem… New computer or ?..

I think wait to see what the Audi service centre says but I won't be surprised if they try and quote you for a new gearbox. If this is the case then it'd be worth searching for a 2nd hand one. You'll need one with the same part number/name as yours.

Hi i got 7 speed auto box and flywheel went on it so changed that and on reverse car started to stall first time so i ran adaptation on internal clutch with VCDS and that sorted it out also could be as simple as software update in gearbox just talk to mechanics.
