Q5 50 TFSIe intelligent mode not working

Featured Replies

Hi. I’m new to the forum and wondered if anybody has had the same issue. It’s a 23 build year and recently, when in intelligent mode, the car doesn’t shut off the petrol engine, which is resulting in sub 20mpg. It’s intermittent but for sure, it’s definitely not right. It’s booked in with Audi in a few days. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks, Steve,

I’m hopeful that they do find a fault when they plug it in, as there are no fault  messages in the MMI, which I find strange. I’ll update post following Monday’s visit to Audi.

Hi

Same problem.

Any update about the solution?

Thanks

Welcome Antonio,

Regrettably Andrew never did return to let the forum know how the issue was resolved. Let’s hope he does now, but if not, you could send him a PM and hope for a response.

Regards,

Gareth.

Thank you very much for your reply.

Audi dealership is trying to solve this problem since october 2023. After the diagnosis they find error P044100 - EVAP emission incorrect. The solution was to change N80 valve, but the problem came back!  Every 2000km, more or less, the problem returns and i have to stop  the car, shut off engine and restart the car so that the system works normally again. I went back to the workshop more than 10 times and they changed practically everything in the EVAP system, but without success. Next appointment at the dealership will be on the 11th. I'm curious about what they'll replace this time...

Many thanks Antonio,

If we haven’t received a response from Andrew by the end of tomorrow, I’ll send him a PM for you, and hopefully post a response.

Regards,

Gareth.

Thank you very much.

Hi all. Really sorry I forgot to post. This is how it went with Audi, Oldham.
The technician told me that the diagnostic found no faults and that the issue was that I had deselected intelligent coasting in the MMI. He told me that he activated it again, drove up and down the motorway, and all is well. So…when I went to collect the car, and although I told him that the intelligent coasting mode had been switched off since new, he was adamant that this is what the issue was.
Anyway, since being plugged in the diagnostic, and intelligent coasting off again, it’s back to normal !?
I think a reset of the ‘brain’ of the car must have been done, but I wasn’t told that.
in conclusion, when the electric charge is depleted, it shuts off the petrol engine into regen electric just as it should. The complete opposite to the issue I had, which was that the car never shut off the petrol engine, and instead decided to charge the battery, which resulted in sub 20 mpg for two weeks of driving.
Again, sorry for this very late post and that I can’t be more helpful.

Hello.

Thank you for your reply.

Although the problem is the same, the origin must be different, since the car always gives an EVAP system error, and I never turned off the intelligent coasting system. Tomorrow it will go back to the garage. Let's see what the "project" for a solution is this time. Luckily, I bought an extended warranty when I bought the car, so I still have the warranty until October 2026. I hope that is enough time for the Audi technicians to find a solution...

Best regards

Hi MiguelP,

I would state to the dealer that it must be rectified before your extended warranty expires.

Mine must have been an electrical ‘glitch’ because the only thing Audi Oldham did was to plug it into the diagnostic.

Hope you get it resolved.

Regards,

Andrew

Hi all,

Since my last post in June, the issue has reoccurred. In intelligent mode, the petrol engine does not shut off. The electric range in fact increases and the car does not alternate between ICE and electric. I am experiencing 15mpg at best on my usual ten mile journeys. (With the battery depleted I usually get 25 - 30 in similar temperatures).

I am booked in again at Oldham Audi on 22nd Jan, so I will provide an update post.

Andy

Hello

In my case (sporadic EVAP system failure), after 15 visits to the workshop, the first in August 2023 and the last in October 2025, apparently the problem is solved. They told me it was a defect in the tube (nº 3 in picture) that goes from the N80 valve to the activated carbon filter. After changing the entire tube, from the filter to the valve, and about 6000km driven, the problem did not happen again. I hope it's resolved.

Meanwhile, another problem has arisen: the battery does not charge above 95%...

Tired of this car!

Hi,

Thanks for your post, I will mention it when in Audi next week. Me too, I am frustrated with it, and not enjoying it, as I should be for £56,000! I won’t be choosing a plug in hybrid again, that’s for sure!

Hi. Had a long chat with the master technician. He said there were no error faults. Had no explanation for it. Drove out of the dealership and it occurred again. 11mpg over five miles. So drive back to dealership and took the technician out in the car. After a mile of driving, it started working, cutting off the petrol engine like it should. So none the wiser. He had no answers and had not seen this before.
Dropped him off, then half way home after 4 miles of driving, and it’s not working again! It’s charging the battery in intelligent mode, and staying fully in petrol at very poor mpg.
I’m going to write to the dealership head of operations because I cannot keep this car for another 21 months like this.
I’ll repost an update when I can.
