C7 a6 2.0 using extreme amounts off diesel

Featured Replies

Hi

This car used almost 3/4 tank diesel in around 15 miles driving . I see no leaks anywhere.
oil level is reading normal so I’m assuming that the fuel isn’t being lost there .
I have checked but see no injector for dpf , and am asking if one exists for this car . It doesn’t have adblue ..

I have done 2 forced regenerations which read successful.

car is reading no faults for engine and starts, idles and seems drive fine .
you can smell diesel fumes outside, and it is a little Smokey .

any opinions gratefully accepted on what to look for

thankyou .

Only a little smokey? The sort of consumption you report should lead to rapid blocking of the DPF or a dense black impenetrable cloud behind the car which would get you stopped by the police.

Is it possible the fuel guage is reading wrongly and the consumption is much less than you thought? Alternatively there may be a diesel leak from the fuel pipe only while the engine is running.

Yes, only a little smoky tbh . Def no black smoke .
had car on lift whilst running and no leaks anywhere.
giage seems ok, as I ran the car in shed and it stopped. Put in more diesel and it started again. Drove it a few miles and dropped 70 miles on the range again

Hello Chris,

Perhaps we can get a bit more background on this:-

Is the unbelievable 15 miles on 3/4 of a tank full of diesel a typo?
How long have you owned the car, and what do you know of its history?
Did it come to you with this problem, or has it developed this thirst over a period of time?
Regards,

Gareth.

Hi magnet .

I only bought this car for myself, had needed few bits painted.
The car came with a full tank of diesel almost , and I drove it 15 miles to my house. The gauge dropping whilst on route . Had approx 40 miles range left when I got there.
I ran it over few different days and it airlocked, stopped. Put in more diesel and went again . I know nothing of its history . It has 140,000 miles approx , which appear genuine going through mot’s etc

I haven’t yet ran live data to possibly get an idea of injectors behaviour.
As it idles too well I thought.
so that’s why I was looking to know if there was an injector for dpf(on exhaust, or manifold) as thought this maybe only place it could be leaking vast amounts off diesel .

Frank.

I really can not believe 3/4 of a tank in 15 miles without badly affecting performance or generating enormous amounts of smoke. That equates to about one and a half miles per gallon if my arithmetic is correct!

To my mind either the fuel is leaking at a considerable rate, which I am certain you would see, or the fuel guage is wrong. My money is on the fuel guage.

I don't know easy it is to remove the sender from the fuel tank and replace it with a new one, but that may be the quickest way to prove the point. Ideally I would want to drain the tank then add a measured quantity of fuel before driving it until the tank is empty, but that's not really a practical proposition.

I let this car idle, and a short spin after getting it home and it ran out off fuel .
put £40 diesel in, showed around 190 miles range. Did 2 regenerations a then short drive, and it’s now reading 105 miles range.
Guage rose 3 nicks at that time, and dropped 1 nick since this .

so I believe guage is right

Does anyone know if these cars have an injection system for the dpf

thanks

Ok, thanks

i was assuming the same , but don’t know .
I’m completely out of ideas as to what is wrong with this car

Hi never mind the live data for the injectors, if the car has done that sort of milage the most likely candidates are, MAP, MAF sensors the MAF very rarely throws a code even when knackered, most important are the EGT sensors as if they are bad they will cause the ecu to massively overfuel the engine  as a bad EGT will sometimes give minus readings so the ECU thinks its way to cold in there so it humps in another bucket of diesel, hence the smoke, also check your soot loadings if the calculated is way higher than the measured one or all of the above will be your problem.

BTW no fifth injector, the engines are post injection strategy for regeneration.

Hi Stevey

I really appreciate your reply and help.
I will get back to this car again in a few days and make a start at looking at those sensors .

Are there 2 egt sensors do you know, and are these just after the turbo ?

Hi there are three sensors one after the turbo another after the cat and yet another on the exhaust after the DPF, dont know what diagnostic system you are using but you should be able to pull up all three and any sensor that throws up a fluctuation that goes into minus or 00 is dead I would also get another MAF sensor as these often start the problem you have, if its any help there is a post on the C7 forum from a couple of years ago under Big Townz, I posted a lot of diagrams on it if you can't find it I am sure if you PM Magnet the wizard of the forum he will be only to happy to point you in the right direction.

Cheers Steve

I got a bit off a look at those posts and think they’re helpful also . My engine code is the cglc as far as I mind .
I have a copy of vcds which should be good enough to identify them I think .

Hi most of the engines from 2013 late to 2018 share a generic design as about late 2015 they were given the CNH designation the turbo and exhaust configuration has always been the same but if you could post a picture of your engine minus the cover that will help a lot, and the VCDS should be more than adequate.

Thanks Steve

I’ll get a picture in next few days . Probably Tue evening before I get back to it .
I read bits off a post you were in , and saw u recommend hydra maximus .
I think I’ll get some and start using it in the few vehicles I have .
Have you any suggestions on a product to help with keeping dpf’s fairly healthy ?

Have you any opinions on the MAF sensors on eBay, or would I be better getting a genuine one, or read what it’s saying 1st on vcds ?

Hi the best all round additive  for keeping everything clean inside the engine including the DPF is a rather clever product called Dipetane it comes from Ireland and has rave reviews I started using it a couple of years ago, its a Hydrocarbon that is added to the tank and makes the soot particles in the DPF burn off at a lower temperature so after using it nearly always get 5g measured and about 6g calculated, Google it, on eBay its around £20 for two litres versus the Hydra at about £26 for a litre.

Hi not trying to cost you loads of money but the only two worth considering are Bosch or NGK believe me I had two aftermarket units on my car which failed in short order, if you can get them off eBay all well and good the part number is on the side of your existing unit so that gets you in the game, try partsinmotion on eBay or the net, I strongly suspect your unit is gone as I found they usually last between 80-100k.

Hi thank you thats the grandad of the CNH series engine which brings up the other problem that engine suffered which was EGR blocking or staying open check the operation of it on live data.
