Rattling noise help please

Featured Replies

I have replaced everything on the serpentine belt side, new tensioner and belt etc but im getting a rattling / chattering noise that seems to be coming from the top of the engine, the noise only happens on idle, but when the revs are picked up the noise goes away, could really do with some help on whats causing this please.

Hi if its done high milage and its chain driven it could be the hydraulic tensioner for the chain not holding pressure.

Thats what i was also thinking, its done 170,000, i dont know what you mean by chain driven,

had a good listen to the car today to try and locate the rattle, im now 99% sure its coming from the dual mass flywheel.

Thanks for your reply, yes i have checked all that, pretty sure its the DMF, got a good quote from a local garage to do the job for £280, but im supplying the parts, not too bad

i will keep you posted thanks

i am intending to buy LUK parts, clutch kit and dual mass flywheel, the price i mentioned above is just the fitting cost, labour only, do you suggest getting other make for the parts, such as Sachs , thanks

Thanks John,

LUK /Sachs ( now one and the same company I believe) would be my recommendation. Still think £280 labour is cheap.

Gareth.

Thanks, i will go with LUK/Sachs then, i took the car to Lion garage our independent  vw/Audi specialists, just to confirm its the flywheel rattling, and they said it was, they also said they would charge £760 labour only to do the job, as its an 8 hour job, i have done a clutch job on an A6 in the past, so i know whats involved, too be honest i wouldn't do the job for £280, and i cant any more due to my health, im considering having it done by Lion as they are experts on Vw/audi and the previous quote i got was from an Asian back street garage ??

Thanks John,

I did say it was (too?) cheap!
Potential thought to consider:-

Some garages (understandably?) will not guarantee the job if you supply the parts. Bit like buying a steak from Lidl and asking your local restaurant to cook it for you!
I would be clarifying this point if it were mine.

If OK with them, you could try reputable eBay sellers for competitive prices. Parts in Motion have given me good prices and service ( no connection - wish there was) over a number of years.
Please let us know how you get on John.
Regards,

Gareth.

Might be fuel purge valve, Total Technik has a video about it on the tube. The rattling sound is like a sewing machine! Hope this helps as there could be numerous causes, good luck.

thanks but i had the car checked at a local audi independent garage and they confirmed it was the flywheel

No worries pal hope it all works out for you.

My dmf started to rattle... mechanic told me drive away at it untill you notice an issue driving rather than noise. I got another 30k miles before it needed replacing, I know a mechanic an he done the job for 120 labour when everyone else quoted me 500+ 🤣

thats a very cheap price for the work involved, i wish i could get mine done for that price.

Hi if you look at the respective years of each car I would say the flywheels are cheaper for the 08 and therefore there may be a margin of profit in the parts.

Best price i could find from an Audi mechanic who does a few private jobs was £350 labour only, my car is a 2011 B8 and best price for a clutch and dmf flywheel kit is £450, they seem to be a lot more expensive for the B8.

Yeah they have went up for parts...my dmf cost me 350 for a sachs one on eBay.

Is that mechanic charging that for cash in hand 🤔😉

  • Author

Yes i am paying cash for the job

  • Author

its a 2011 car and its been out of warranty for a long time now, so it doesn't really matter.
