Audi A4 B6 2004 Avant 2.5TDI not starting

Help please. I was driving as normal, but after pulling off from a junction the steering went heavy for a second, then it recovered back to normal. I drove for another mile or so and when I stopped at the next junction, the engine stopped and wouldn't restart. I think the initial event was caused by the engine stalling. From what I have read it sounds to me that it might be the crankshaft position sensor. They look like they're cheap enough so I thought that would be the first thing to try as the car has done 202,000 miles.

I need help finding where the sensor is on the engine. Anyone got any clues?

Agree with Steve, scan car rather than guessing. As mentioned, could be anything, high pressure fuel pump, skipped a tooth on timing, etc. Tool of choice would be VCDS.

Have you done a diagnostic check to see if any fault codes flag up?

Could be an issue with the high pressure fuel pump.

Thanks for the quick reply Steve and Spartacus
. I have a Topdon ArtiDiag600S and it's not reporting any errors. My thinking is that the car ran perfectly after the first stall so it wouldn't be a slipped timing belt. I'm happy to spend a few quid on a new Crank sensor I just need to know it's location on the engine.

Could be a timing belt issue. What's the engine code/bhp?

I ask because the older version of the engine such as AYM etc had a different head whereby if the cambelt snapped/jumped it wouldn't wreck the head/valves etc.

Where as the later engines with 180bhp engine codes bsu or similar has a revised head with roller cams whereby if the cambelt snapped/jumped the pistons could smash into the valves and wreck the head.

Hi Steve

The engine is the 180 with the roller bearings.

The engine is in time. None of the belts have snapped or jumped. All the timing marks still align.  The engine turns over fine it just doesn't start.

I just want to know where the Crankshaft Position Sensor is located on the engine.

That's good to know. Sorry if I got the wrong end of the stick.

Is it engine code BAU (132kw)? Search on Autodoc quoting your registration. My understanding is they are 3-pin hall sensors, and will be located near or behind timing belt cover on both banks. You can also double-check on LLL Parts and access diagrams (likely under electrical), not engine.

Thanks for the reply Spartacus 68
Autodoc is saying its 180hp AKE. It also says it is a 6 speed manual but it's an Automatic 5 speed.

There is an injector sensor on pot 3 which has never worked since I have had the car 8 years.

The list of sensors on Autodoc show a 3 pin connector. I think I've found that position. I'm pointing to it the the picture attached. It disappears behind all sorts but it looks like the sensor will be on the back of the block offside. I will need to remove the air intake to be able to see better but I'm going to wait until the weather improves.

I've looked on LLL parts and they don't list my model which is confusing

I'll take another look later on. Autodoc can be a bit of a lottery unless you have Audi part number to cross-reference. There's also erWin (pay to view).

Thanks Spartacus 68

That's why I'm trying to locate its position so I can remove it and hopefully get a part number off it. I know I can test if it's working with a multi meter. I guess it will be a process of elimination.
