Morning all ,

Hitched up my caravan to Q7 last Thursday morning .Loaded dogs grand children and wife into car .

All set for a weekend in Suffolk ,

While travelling along the A 12 the cruise control stopped working n, strange I thought , heard about electrical issues .

Within minutes battery light comes up and message saying Battery Low will charge while driving , continue driving .

Then all hell breaks loose , while negotiating a roundabout the gearbox disengaged !!!!

Luckily I know the road well and knew there was a lay-by ahead

Managed to roll to the lay-by just in time as the car locked top and the engine cut out .

Called AA , after a 12 hour saga was recovered back to home , luckily my son was working close to where we broke down so was able to take take wife , children and dogs home early in the recovery saga .

car registered 19/10/18 apparently outside an extended warranty applicable to Alternator issues .

Given that my experience was a lucky one , it was in my opinion !Removed! dangerous the speed at which the failure occurred .

I was not aware of any safety issues with car and if is surely the cars affected should be subject to a recall !!

Welcome Tony, and sorry to hear of your stressful issue.

So what was the AA’s diagnosis? Alternator or battery, or indeed both?

When was the battery last renewed Tony, since these can suffer from catastrophic failure on these battery-condition - sensitive modern vehicles?

Are the AA still relay-hopping you to your destination, rather than one direct recovery home?

Not sure what warranty would be applicable with this 8 year old vehicle.

Tony, is yours a mild hybrid with 48 volt battery? If it is then the problem is well known.

Yes mine is the mild hybrid , just been transported to Audi dealer for diagnostics , will keep you posted

AA relay hopped as the original recovery would not or were not allowed by to take me car and caravan the whole way , all of 96km from breakdown to home !

Could be as simple as a the starter generator belt slipping due to tensioner failure.

Manifests as something drastic but easily fixed.

Keep us updated please.

Hi peeps following Diagnostics

Starter generator failure cost of replacement £3100ish

12 v battery ,replacement £665

Have put a complaint to Audi and reported this to DVSA

This fault is is no joke someone will be seriously hurt or worse as a result I hope not !!!
