Hydraulic whine when low speed engine idle a/c on

Featured Replies

I’d thought I’d check in on this as my tdi 40 is now coming up to 3 years old.

My a/c is always on during summer without fail. This is the first time I’ve ever heard this, this loud. I normally can mainly hear it in the cabin when turning steering wheel on full lock, you know that a/c moan/groan sound.

it sounds like the condenser fan blowing, picks up pitch and rhythm with rev counter.

So I’m going to assume it’s probably belt related.

Anyone experienced this? I’ve booked it in but typical main dealer response ‘ this is fairly normal’ ‘have you added refrigerant in the last 12 months’

For context it was regassed last year even though I had no concerns I just do it given that I know the gas will leak and also lubricates the system.

I'd say it is more likely related to power steering than AC.
