Hello Dave, Did it go out of your ownership some 3 years ago? It seems to be doing a relatively high annual mileage since it left you, and although I share your wish to reunite the key and car, it will prove to be an almost impossible task, so I think you just as well now junk it ( some 3 years on-?) unless, by chance, someone may recognise the number operating in their locality. If you are buying on price, then it could be argued you have done the right thing - until you see the new model, and have to accept the far more rapid depreciation on the older model you have just bought. Hello Eric, Welcome and thanks for joining. 100K is not a great mileage these days, but 22 year old seals would need to be respected, and certainly inspected, before any decision is made to replace them or not. What wouldn’t be acceptable to me is the ‘refusal’ to change them bit. If it were mine, I would be finding another mechanic to entrust the job to. I think I have this right, but could you just confirm that when you partially remove the dip stick, you are conscious of pressure being blown passed the dipstick - I used to call it chuffing - and was the primary test for diesels ( in particular) for blowing passed the pistons, usually due to bore and/or piston ring wear. Does that principle still apply with the breather systems on the more modern engines ??? What service history does the car have, and even if it’s not blowing excessive smoke from the exhaust, have you had it long enough to judge its oil consumption? Kind regards, Gareth.

Take it you have checked the on-line MOT history to gather more information on its past history since its first MOT in 2014-? Apologies, I cannot give you any background to the model itself, although members may well come up with this, to compliment what will be available to you on-line. Belts renewed at 65 to 70K. - 30 odd K ago. Do you know when this was Simon, to see where it stands within the ‘old guidelines’ on time related changes? Kind regards, Gareth.

Hello Simon, Is this car being sold privately or by a dealer? If privately, it might be worthwhile getting a local-to-them independent to appraise the car before committing, unless you feel you are competent in carrying out your own inspection. Same would really apply via. a dealer sale, but you would have the benefit of some warranty with them. Whatever, a small investment in this pre- purchase may well prove to save in the longer term. Check brands and uniformity of tyre treads - important on these. Kind regards, Gareth.

Hello Ian, Yes, I do for the non-Audi. For the Audi, it’s a physical file with all dated receipts. Probably a bit old fashioned, but I think you can’t beat a physical file, which for the Audi, must be over an inch thick. Kind regards, Gareth.

Hello Harry, I’m not going to pre-guess any possible cause, but my opinion - for what it’s worth - is that any connection with adding Redex is more likely to be coincidental, as would be a restricted fuel filter. If it were mine, I would be booking the car in for a diagnostic check with a trusted local independent - rather than a main dealer. You can then hopefully talk directly with a technician - and come away without frightening your wallet! Kind regards, Gareth.

Hello Harry, Sorry to hear of your issue:- (1) I too would be very surprised if the car doesn’t have a fuel filter. (2) I would be equally surprised if a fuel filter on a 19k petrol engined car would need changing, or would be the primary cause of the warning you are having.
