Hot start issues

Featured Replies

Hi all. I have a 2ltr tdi 140bhp sline that starts instantly when cold but takes a few turns to start when warm/Hot only a minor niggle with another wise fantastic car it's a 2005 car with 94000 miles any advice on how to sort this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to the forum Neil, you'll find the members on here are a friendly and helpful bunch 🙂

have you had a diagnostic check carried out at all? If not then this is what I would recommend. I'm guessing you're not losing any coolant etc. also it could be caused by failing crank sensors.

also what colour is exhaust smoke? As this can be a tell tale sign there's an issue.

cheers

Steve

Thanks Steve had a full carbon clean done recently and it had flagged up one of the glow plugs ,maf sensor and lumbar sensor but apparently the clean cleared all those faults! I didn't have the clean done to sort this problem but it made no difference to the starting issue but the car does run better! Think I will start with the glow plugs as this is a cheap job I can do myself! Thanks again. Btw very little smoke and not lost any coolant etc.

More information

Hello  Neil,

Personally, I would  forget glow plugs since these control the cold starting in cold weather. Your cold starting appears to be fine.

Does the car smell of diesel, or push out a bit of smoke during it's brief attempts to start quickly when hot?

If it were mine, I would be finding a good local diesel specialist (ask your local taxi drivers for recommendations) and entrusting diagnosis to them.

Injectors?? - but it could be due to a variety of causes.

Kind regards,

Gareth.

Hey Neil,

Could you get the culprit ?

Jose
