True think it was the drive down the m.o.t Station that made the decision, ordered the 2 wishbone arms as I'll change both, jobs for today will change the plates over, and put the dash camera on

I'll look forward to seeing pics of it out on the road 🙂

Well got the control arms went to put them on wrong ones there too big 14mm was correct just too wide to fit in the hole on the v part the 8K0407695C item number don't come up on there system, the part number you need is ss2721 left side and ss2722 for the right side, not sure if the other ones are for the a5 can't get my money back as I put them on the car but thay did me a deal on the correct ones so if these fit your car just 50.00 I payd 130.00

Edward, I see the skill of rebuilding engines has not died then, used to do this when I first started driving. I presume your one of my generation or near.

Keep up the good work.

Did the engine come out the bonnet or drop through the bottom, plus it will be a big lump as well,  being  a 4.2.

I saw a 4 litre Vauxhall the other day, straight 4 with decompression !Removed! for hand starting. Looked a very simple engine but another big lump. Open all !Removed!, swing her tound on the handle , then get an assistant to shut 2&3 !Removed! and it will fire , then shut the other two. 1920, chap was taking it down to Le Mans from Berkshire. No front brakes , just rear rod brakes or drive it in the ditch for plan B.

Ed,

Talking to a chap in our street with an M registered  Stag and he said he lifted the Rad header tank higher to give the water pump a head of water. I will see if I can blag a picture of what he did. They were known for overheating and warped heads, perhaps for that reason. Some whipped the engine out and put the SD1 3.5 in it, without the Stag problems.

Interesting to see how you get on. I assume its a retirement hobby?

Brother has a 1934 Daimler 15, 2ltr  straight 6 he is restoring, engine sounds lovely , especially when he opens the straight through flap on the exhaust. Starts first time as well. Spares are like hens teeth and cost a fortune if you find anything , but with a bit of African Ingenuity you can use something else. Found a wiper motor off something more modern and replaced original that fell apart when opened up, wire and comm segments everywhere.

Its handy if you have a lathe, metal bending machine, sewing machine, and Mig, Tig and Stick welding machines and can use them all. Rewired, changed the trembler regulator to a solid state one that fits in the same box, if your interested I can find info on the one man band that does them, he had a 1930's Austin big 7 converted that way as well.

He also found a place that stick& bakes on linings to brake shoes, that's up in Malton Yorkshire.

His problem is trying to get it registered with DVLA, they keep asking for a Vin number, muppets!

One headlight was for dipping by using a complicated solenoid to move the reflector down, the other headlight went dark, he's changing them to two lamps in the reflectors, luckily the reflectors  are chromed brass not plastic like today, glass lens as well.

Look forward to hearing your progress and problems.

Ed,

Very nice, I had a red 1500 S  Reg Spitfire in my late 20's. After a A35 van as my first set of wheels I went for Triumphs after that, they had a bit of class and you could get right into the engine by just upping the bonnet(  swivelled forward from the bumper) and sitting on a wheel. 1200, 1360 then the Spitfire and finishing with the 1980  TR7  with the Dolomite Engine and SD1 Gearbox, but a little light on the rear end unless loaded. The first ones had the Herald gearbox which wasn't quite man enough and only 4 speed, but this was 5 spd.

Then I got married and moved to the US, spoilt the fun I could had, but was getting long in the tooth so better late than never.

The 3.5 is the old aluminium Buick engine that the Yanks couldn't do much with, but Rover gave it a few mods, decent SU or  Stromberg carbs and she was a good workhorse. Tuners even put it in the TR8, 300 hp I think they tweaked it to. I think some even went in MGB GT's, with a shoe horn.

Is this going to be a runner or restore and sell?
