A4 cambelt change - latest recommendation on interval ?

Featured Replies

Hi all.  Quick question please from a new member:

I'm aware of an earlier thread which discussed a possible change in Audi guidance to be purely mileage-based.  Since the latest post there was 2023, would anyone know the latest position please?  (2017 A4 quattro, done 85k miles).  Thanks.

Welcome Glyn and thanks for joining.

There have been quite a number of posts on this subject over the last couple of years.
As you will realise once you have read them, VAG have changed their recommendation on belt change intervals and removed the ‘………or every 5 years, whichever comes first’.
This leaves the owner to decide whether they now follow VAG’s current advice of no time limit, and run the risk of catastrophic ( economical write off potential) failure, or spend and buy into peace of mind and get the belt assembly changed every 5 years.
Please bear in mind that low annual mileages usually result in additional stress on belts, due to the number of stop/starts and gear/rev changes.
In effect David, the decision will ultimately rest with you.
Kind regards,

Gareth.

Belated thanks for the response - had been waiting for local Audi dealership to confirm their official position, which is indeed 140k, with no time limits.

Yet to decide on way forward

If this were mine I wouldn't chance it.

On my daily 2016 ford Kuga the interval was 10 years or 120k but ford has since changed this. Good job I found this out as my cambelt was on the verge of snapping at 85k.

Thanks for the advice Steve Q

Let us know what you decide Gwyn, but please take time to read responses on similar threads in the past.
In case it helps, I’m very much in Steve’s camp.
