Wheel Bearing??

Featured Replies

If you think it’s an off side wheel bearing, then do a left hand turn and see if the noise becomes louder.
N/s bearing suspected - take a right hand turn and see if the noise gets louder.

I think it might be slightly louder when steering right , so im thinking left hand bearing , only very slightly louder , to be honest if the radio is on you'd hardly hear it , so im thinking its only getting rough rather than gone . Its booked in for a service in 3 weeks so im hoping it should last until then . At least now I know its not the tyres , the tyre shop gave the 2 that were on the car a good check and confirmed that the tyres weren't the problem,  so my garage wants to check it tomorrow to confirm but won't be able to do the job until 3 weeks time . To be honest I've had bearings in the past that would drown out the radio .

The noise stays while coasting so it shouldn't be a gearbox bearing as its there with no load and the gearbox is acting very normal   , so im thinking for sure wheel bearing .

Thanks Jon,

If it were mine, I would now put in in the ‘don’t worry about it box’ pending the car getting looked at by the garage.
No disrespect, but you appear to be dealing with this in a patient and medical specialist basis, whereby you are trying to diagnose something you are about to pay others to diagnose for you.

Regards,

Gareth.

Ya there is definitely a noise there while driving , faint but there.  Think its my OCD telling me its the worst thing ever ,like differential or transmission humming , when it could be just a wheel bearing on the way out . Its a case of wait and see if suppose.

Be sure John, something else will crop up to occupy a worrying mind!

Ha ha thanks that sounds very encouraging!

Just back from garage , defo wheel bearing not sure if right or left , can't hear it spinning wheels by hand , but right was done last year so I think its the left same side as cv joint was replaced on . Being done in 3 weeks , said its safe out to drive until then no play in wheels.

Surprise, surprise Nigel.
At least the vet has sight of the patient, albeit it cannot tell him what’s wrong.
Forums are expected to diagnose faults without access to the vehicle, and often with vague descriptions of the symptoms.
Regards,

Gareth.

Update , 2 new tyre on front,  so new tyres all around , still humming .

That's unfortunate, but has at least eliminated unmatched tyres as the source of the noise, and should give you confidence in them. Did you choose low noise tyres for the replacements?

The culprit finally started revealing

itself , front passenger side wheel bearing noising when wheel spinning with traction control off,  so was able to spin wheel fast enough . It is the same side that the cv joint was done on last month . Weather the bad cv damaged the bearing or it was damaged when the cv was being installed,  either way I finally found the problem , its being changed in 2 weeks , just have to limp on until then .

So you have a pair of worn out tyres at the back and two unmatched new tyres at the front? It's not worth considering any thing else until you get the tyres sorted out.

I really struggle to believe that people think it's perfectly fine to drive around like this. Legal it may be, advisable it definitely isn't.

I have checked the wheel for any sort of play , and will be doing daily , its the only mode of transport I have to work , so yes I will be driving ot for the next 2 weeks . I never said its perfectly fine , but it is a necessity.

Ive also had 2 different mechanics check it and they both reassure me that its only after starting and its mild enough noise with zero play it will be fine for the next couple of weeks of driving .

Hello again John,

Apologies, but I’m having a ‘say it as I see it day’, and I think you are seriously overthinking this wheel bearing noise issue. Let’s hope nothing else occurs to engage a worrying mind, and if it is, it’s not too serious!
Sorry John.

Kind regards,

Gareth.

No problem Gareth , im sure your probably right , as I tell people I consider myself " an optimistic pessimist " Im optimistic that it will always go wrong ! 😀

I can’t stress this enough, don’t discount your wheel bearings. I am a very experienced ex Mechanic and had the same bearing noise on my A4. It sounded like it came from the centre front of the car and the usual test, of cornering left or right made no difference, indicating that it wasn’t a wheel bearing. I was convinced it was a diff issue, however I thought I’d change the wheel bearing as it’s a fast job and the bearings are relatively cheap. I never expected it to cure the bearing noise but it did. Clearly the hub fitted bearings, are not effected by cornering as the noise remained constant. So, if you have a humming bearing noise from the front of your Audi, odds on that it’s a wheel bearing. A tip if you do it yourself, heat the hub bearing bolts if they are tight. Mine were solid.
