Loss of power - turbo? EGR? sensor? please help

Featured Replies

Hi guys, recently bought an audi a4 on 110k miles. since buying the car for £2000, i have spent nearly the same in repairs and garage fees. it has not been kind to me.

Recently got the car back after having a new timing belt kit, water pump, 2 new camshafts, aux belt - the list goes on. within a week, my EML came on after dropping down a gear and i have loss of power after around 2600 revs, along with a flashing glowplug light.

ive been told by a friends "mechanically minded" dad, that the turbo is goosed, but then i have also been told it probably will be the EGR Valve or even a boost pressure sensor! good to mention that there is no smoke on acceleration etc.

codes found when plugged in:

p0299

05171

confused is not the word.

Any help is greatly appreciated as i genuinely think im going to write the car off at this point.

amazing thanks all xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Sorry to hear of your situation and for the delayed reply.

p0299 indicates turbo under boost. Before writing off the turbo if get your mechanic to check the turbo pipes, as over time these can perish and where they attach to the turbo they can let sir through when under pressure but would look fine when not under pressure if that makes sense.

Your second fault code 05171 supports my theory as it implies a boost leak from a pipe or similar.

Hi there. Something i have found on mine that i was not expecting was the wastegate actuator lever had detached from the wastegate flap for some reason, i'm certain that this would cause a similar issue and it's hard to see without removing the turbo but may be worth checking out first 👍

I have had similar on a 2013 2.0d with 180000 miles.

it was a combination of two things, slow response due to carbon deposits in the variable vanes of the turbo. This did not require a turbo rebuild, if you remove the turbo and split it the variable vanes are in front if you, a good clean off with carb cleaner & petrol got rid of a real notchiness.

it still however came up with turbocharger/supercharger under pressure error. The EGR cooler was blocked solid. The valve body and valve was fine unfortunately you cannot buy just the cooler. Replacing this (good luck with the mount bolts, they are a nightmare) - error now gone.

an occasional bottle of turbo / diesel system cleaner in the fuel tank keeps it clear.
