Hi All and thank you for letting me join. I have recently acquired an Audi estate in...what could be deemed a bit of a state. It's a low mileage, barely run in (245,000 miles) but it's had everything done and drives perfectly. There are a couple of problems which apparently are common (door lock failures, rear wiper motor etc.) which I have done. I now have a new problem with the esp light on and the garage diagnosed multiple Steering angle sensor faults. I've watched a few you tube demos with some interesting techniques of removing the airbag with the ignition on (😳). so I wonder if anyone knows of an independent garage/ mechanic that could do the work? Failing that, could any kind folk advise if a new SAS would need recoding/ calibrating with an Audi diagnostic machine? Any help would be very much appreciated. TIA.

Hi it is most likely that the new clock spring will need coding but on earlier models such as yours you can sometimes get away with fitting it without the ignition on and then with the ignition on turn the the wheel from lock to lock six times, failing that it will need to be coded so make a note of the code on the new unit, I would not advise fitting the new unit with the power on as in the unlikely event it does deploy it will A try and remove your face and B render the control unit dead which will cause a lot more problems.

Hi Steve, many thanks for the advice. I must admit I was clenching when the guy on the video was taking the airbag apart with the battery on! I will give the swap a try and see what happens. At worse I could find someone with a machine to code it for me. Thank you once again for the advice.
