Checking oil level

Featured Replies

How can  I check the oil level? The computer is not allowing me to do it and Audi have advised me not to use a dip stick.

When I try to check the oil level, the message displayed reads - engine must be warm and running for at least two minutes. Both of these criteria have been met but it still won't display the level. There are no warning lights on the dashboard but, I am not sure they are working properly either.

Welcome Paul,

I guess this year car would have come with a handbook - ?
Have you checked the oil level procedure according to the handbook?
Appreciating manufacturers may specify different procedures, but my similar age non- Audi must be checked with the engine cold. This makes sense to me, since from the good old days! of dipsticks, the procedure was always to check oil level on level ground, with engine cold - for me, after standing overnight.

Regards,

Gareth.

Every single warning light should illuminate for a few seconds after turning the ignition key. It's a lamp test function designed, as the name suggests, to demonstrate if the bolbs are working.

I suspect the oil level fault is a separate matter to the above, and is probably a sensor failure. Scanning with a decent code reader should confirm. I believe a new sensor is cheap but I don't know how difficult it is to fit.

If your car has a dipstick then it will be more than adequate for checking oil level until you get the sensor sorted out. Dip the oil once per week according to the car handbook, or more often if the engine is known to be an oil guzzler.

If youve followed the procedure and it's not working then it might be worth getting a diagnostic check to see if any fault codes flag up. It could be an issue with the oil level sensor.

Alfie, i've found the oil level procedure a bit erratic ( on 2013  C7 ) - I believed I'd followed all the requirements - sometime it would show me the oil level, sometimes not!  Realise that's a very non technical answer, but my experience was to keep trying, maybe drive for a bit longer first etc. - and eventually I hit the right method!

Many thanks Tim, but it seems we have all wasted our time in responding to the OP who hasn’t returned to the forum since the day he joined and posted. Good isn’t it?
Let’s hope the advice given may help others.

Regards,

Gareth.

Good morning all.

Due to extreme personal circumstances, this is the first chance I have had to reply to your helpful messages.

The most compatible reply was from Bobbins. I, too, tried everything I was supposed to do. After having booked the Audi A4 into the garage to have it checked out, it suddenly rectified itself after five weeks of not allowing me to check the oil level.

Perhaps it was a computer blip. It is a complete mystery to me.

Thank you for your time.

Thank you for getting back to us Paul. Glad it was just a blip 🙂
