Can my A6 mmi be upgraded by software to Apple car play

Featured Replies

I have owned my early 2018 build A6 from new.  The MMI is

Navigation database version:
8X0919884K - P38-50-16.03

Software version:
RMC_EU_P16342

Has anyone successfully upgraded this to allow for apple car play? If so, what do I need.  Many thanks

Andrew

Possibly, depends on the hardware build state of your car, some were built with the hardware but if the original buyer didn’t spec that option, it wasn’t enabled. My 2015 Allroad did have the hardware so I  bought an SD card to do the Android auto upgrade.

If you need the hardware as well I think it’s £500-1000 now. Not sure. Try Autologics or Audi Retrofits, sure they can do it.

Thanks for this. I have owned the car from new and the 5F MMI was replaced by Audi last year after a fault developed in it.  I didn't upgrade the MMI when I ordered the car.  is there anyway of establishing if i can check if my car has this option?

Just an update for all.

I've tried Autologist  and they don't do car play. Ive emailed and  waiting to hear back from Audi Retrofits.

if anyone knows of what equipment may be needed for an upgrade I'd be delighted to hear.

Thanks

Andrew

Audi retrofits do do it, my son had his A6 done there if you need the hardware. Think it was around £500.

but I think your car will already have the hardware, so a software update should do it. (Same as my 2015). That cost about £70 but its now bundled with a map update for £99.

have a look at this website, you can find out if you just need a software update. Search on:-

’satnavmapupdates’ - (Sat nav map updates).

Thanks so much. I'll check that out. Really appreciate your input.

No worries

Would it not be easier to use an android phone instead ??

Usually, any kit r software upgrade to allow you to use Apple car play will also work for Android Auto, so it’s a ‘one size fits all’ thing.

Oh. I thought audis maybe came with android auto as standard , cable not wireless . ??  Not had my Audi long ,so forgive my ignorance. 😁

Some did, but I think that’s only the more recent models, back when mine was built (2015), it was only an option, although they fitted the kit but only activated it if that option was purchased. So mine just needed a software update.

How sis you do the software update? From main dealer? I have the tech pack on a 2018 a6 avant. The smart phone icon is greyed out. Was hoping to unlock it, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hi. I don't have the tech pack and there is no car play icon on my screen.

Im still working on getting the software updated to a version that may have car play but im told there is only a 50/50 chance of it working. If not I need to have a unit installed to the rear of the MMI 5F unit.

it will be the New Year before I try.

I bought from the site:

’Satnavmapupdates’  (Sat nav map updates - all one word).

the website will explain how to check which MMI software version you’ve got (which is dictated by the hardware fitted) & whether you can just upgrade the software to get car play/android auto.

If the answers no, you’ll need hardware upgrades as well & that cost my son around £500 some 4-5 yrs ago in his A6 Avant

the actual upgrade is easy via SD card you just plug in.

if you order from them, they’ll send you a ‘how to’ guide by email.

ive added android auto/car play & updated the maps via this company. Very easy & not expensive (I bought them separately over about 18 months but think its  cheaper to buy them together.

Hello, thank you for the response. I will have a look into this evening. Hopefully it's just a software update.

Thanks for this. I'll give it a go and let the group know how I get on. Cheers

If you need the hardware give these folks a shout  Home | Retrofit  They have just done my 2014 allroad with the hardware and everything to upgrade the 3g+ MMI to include carplay/android auto, and it all works a dream ... total cost was £650 with the work done on my drive (wiltshire). Very impressed and would recommend any day.

Regards to my A6 Avant 2018 tech pack the version I have states MHI2_ER_AU57x_p3634

the smart phone interface icon is greyed out on the menu list. Does anyone know if it just requires an update to be enabled/activated? Main dealer job or can VCDS do it? Any help would be appreciated. I contact retrofits Audi but cant justify spending £240 for the service.
