Petrol E5 or E10. Any downsides?Upsides? Discuss.

Subject pretty much says it all.

Does it make a difference on maintenance and longevity using E5? Or sticking with E10?

Alex,

If your car is in regular use and is not modified or highly tuned, I think using E10 is probably fine and would make little or no difference to the cars performance. However, if your car goes into storage or is off the road during the winter months, then using E5 is a better bet. It contains less ethanol than E10 and ethanol creates condensation which over time can damage fuel lines and potentially cause corrosion in the fuel tank.

Hope this is useful.

My point exactly, unless going into storage or taken out of use.

I accidentally filled up with E5 and I didn't need to refuel for 460 miles. Went back to E10 and it went back to more normal 380 miles. That's why I was wondering.

Hello Alex,

Your last post is a prime example of asking a question, but not revealing the reason for asking that question.
For what it’s worth, I concur with the majority of posts already made ( exception - E10 attracts (in caps) moisture to a greater extent than E5).
Anyway Alex, no brainier, if your car returns more MPG  for your E5 fill, it’s simple economics of whether that increase justifies the increase cost over E10.
Regards,

Gareth.

p.s. I only use E5 in garden machinery for the reasons give.
