No start after stalling, multiple faults on OBD

Featured Replies

Hi,

Stalled my 2022 Audi A3 30 today (well, a learner driver did), and it won't start again.

AA reset the BMS by disconnecting the battery, wouldn't restart to begin with, then eventually did.

Diagnostics showed multiple faults on all modules, and even things like the buttons on the steering wheel wouldn't work.

I recall recently a message popping up for electrical system low, and also the other day the doors wouldn't unlock. I mentioned to the AA could the battery be faulty, but he thinks not and to get it to a garage.

Any help or advice would be appreciated:)

Get the battery professionally tested as a starting point. Your symptoms are typical of a dying battery so that needs to proven or eliminated before getting the car scanned for faults.

It was tested, albeit by Halfords, which suggested replacement. I'll ahead and do that, won't be a waste of money if not. Sadly, still need a garage to reset the BMS 😞

Exactly, so annoying when changing a battery is usually an easy DIY job!

Absolutely not. Halfords are Yuasa made, however the CCA rating isn't quite the same as the original in the car now. Found a well priced Lion AGM at Euro Car Parts.

Had a Lion previously in a different car, and that's still going strong 5 years plus later.

Bless you!
Lion batteries (ECP’s own brand?) would be placed at the bottom of most experienced owners list, and they just wouldn’t touch them.
I think I’ve got this right that they have now rebranded them under a different brand name.
Good luck with that!

OK, EFB or AGM? The one in it from new is EFB.

Use whatever type is recommended in the manual.

Do yourself a favour and get a decent brand. Yuasa and Exide spring to mind. I'm sure there are others that I don't recall at the moment. Cheap batteries always work out more expensive in the end.

So if it’s EBF as fitted at manufacture, then it’s an EBF as a replacement.
I seldom buy from ECP, since they aren’t generally competitive any more.
Note current battery’s capacity, CCA etc. and enter your reg. no. into Tayna and Parts in Motion websites. These  should confirm what you currently have.

My go-to brand is now Exide ( Tayna point you away from Exide and towards their own brand - name?), but do stock Exide as well. Once you have the battery number you require, then go to EBay where you should find both sellers with free postage.
Please let us know how you get on, or if you decide to follow a purchase elsewhere.
Regards,

Gareth.

Got a new battery fitted, however the garage couldn't code it so need to go to an Audi specialist to get that done, but it is running with no faults.

Hi it wont need to go to Audi any half decent independent will have the scanner to do this at a fraction of the cost that the stealers will want.

I went with the Lion battery from ECP, my experience of them was good previously.

Luckily there is a good Audi independent near me so will be taking it there, hopefully this afternoon 🙂

They can't be that bad surely! Still got a Lion battery in another car 6 years later.

No luck at the garage, needs an ODIS session to get it coded, so booked in again next week.

Put it this way:- there are motor factors around here who get their parts from ECP and other sources, but they won’t stock their Lion batteries due to too many issues.

Your car, your money, your choice.

So has anyone any personal experience using one of them?

Oh yes, fine on early vehicles anything after 2000 watch out, I have used them on a couple of old Fords and some early vauxhalls anything after that if you are lucky they might even last couple of years, they are cheap for a reason, the garage I use for cam belts and clutches have a big pile of them as the bottom has fallen out of the scrap value for batteries, so think he is waiting for it to come back, a car of your year needs voltage continuity and it wont get that from a Lion battery, as for the coding I had a look at my OBDeleven and that supports the coding of batteries up to 2024 so think the Odis thing is a bit of a crock but in saying that if you have to go that route at least get something worth coding.

Thanks everyone for your help and advice 🙂

Can confirm OBD11 can code up to 2024 without need for ODIS as parameters will not have changed.

Odd, the Audi specialist used 2 different diagnostic tools with no luck. The tech advised after 2020 Audi started to change access.
