audi drive issue

Recently when driving my 2006 a4 2.0tdi automatic.

when in low revs it has been hesitant for a split second and as if its struggling/going to cut out.it happens irregularly and we cannot pinpoint what causes it, took it to the garage as it did completely cut out on me once but the garage found no fault codes and no issue when he drove it and is clueless on what it may be. 

Recently had a full service in june.

Does anyone have any ideas

my first few questions: when does the car cut out?

How long have you been driving before it cuts out? 

and what is the engine temperature just before it cuts out?

Hello i am gutted as i do love my audi but now i dont want to drive it really as im worried of it cutting out again with my children in the car. Just wish the gargage knew what was wrong with it. 

It happens when in low revs going to accelerate i.e.  Sometimes at a junction then accelerating away it does it. (its only cut out on me once so far) it feels like my wheel is spinning ( but the traction control light doesnt come on ) and it struggles to pull away then and feels slightly if its going to cut out. 

Its just really baffling me to what it is.

In relation to my questions, there could be various reasons why it's trying to cut out. I'm assuming it splutters and has a rough idle? 

Potential causes:

Engine overheating

lack of fuel to the engine (fuel pump?) 

lack of air to the engine (air sensor?) 

mother members may have other suggestions.

it doesnt do any of those so baffling.

My husband think possible fuel issue but not sure as i had a full service and engine flush not even 2 months ago. Its just weird how the garage hasnt got a clue either

Sorry to hear whats happening,The judder (seeming like its about to cut out) what sound does it make (if any) 

I've found sometimes the 1st gear on the gearbox can start creating a judder also like it's about to cut out, similar to a clutch judder. 

If all fail's EGR? @Steve Q

Have you got all clutch and gearbox checked out. see if you can eliminate the moving parts side of it.

I think first point would be a vcds scan and check for faults. Also with vcds they can check pressures/injectors etc

Well finally we think we have a diagnosis clutch and flywheel although coz its a automatic it seems it maybe a job for a specialist which means more expense

I have had exactly the same issue with my B7 -

First of all, does the PRND panel on the dashboard light up - if it does its likely to be one of the solenoids IN the gearbox - that condition would also register a fault code - As stated in a previous post you need to get your car scanned for fault codes, it can save you many hours searching.

My particular fault when I lost drive was a leaking hydraulic pipe for the transmission cooler - eventually there was not enough oil left to drive - THIS DID NOT GENERATE A FAULT CODE.

I had a filter change and fluid change ( its doable for a home mechanic) but I would get a garage to do it - unfortunately you will need an Audi specialist or dare I even say a main dealer.......its quite a specific routine.

There are many Audi auto gearbox repairers out there - do a google search, most of them seem to be in the Birmingham area!

...and just for reference, when you say diagnosed as a clutch problem - which one? - there are SEVEN clutches in your auto box

I thought It would have been the Gearbox or clutch and Clutch was one of the things I said, Unfortunately :( please keep us updated through out Natasha

We have had the car scanned and no fault codes came up and no lights on the dash have come up either weve had one of our mates a mechanic say clutch and flywheel but another of our mates who is a mechanic too hasnt felt experienced the problem yet but he has said more about thus 7 clutch gearbox thing and we are just about to go to him to take him out in it and see what he thinks for sure otherwise unfortunately it will be going to audi and they will be sorting it out which i hope not in somw ways as that will be mega expensive.

Hi everyone the mechanic came out in the car today finally heard what we were saying and he wants to try changing the oil and filter in the system first ( the one thats every 40,000 miles as mine was done at 57000 and my car is at 83000 now) as he said that can effect it but if thats not the problem then it will be reconditioned gearbox and the 7 clutch change

Hello Natasha,

I notice you refer to the car having recently been serviced, and indicating that it's strange that the car is giving trouble so soon afterwards. Unfortunately, servicing is just that, and is no guarantee of any component being trouble free after that - really no different to a light bulb blowing - could be at any time. 

I would agree with your mechanic's (and Mark's) advice on getting the automatic gearbox fluid and filter changed as a worth- a-try operation first, although I think you will find this is not going to be that cheap a servive item. Automatic boxes can be relatively long lived, and manufacturers generally don't state fluid change intervals, but after 11 years, it would seem well worth while having done - problem or no problem. Your situation may be aggravated by the low mileage the car has covered, since auto boxes seem to cope less well with frequent short journeys.

Hello everyone yesterday i had a gearbox oil and filter change but it hasnt made any difference to the thumping/juddering that has been happening not sure what to do really if its best to cut our losses and sell it needing the clutch and flywheel doing or to pay out the £2000 that it will cost to get it done. 

Feeling very deflated about it all 😪😪😪😪 thank you everyone for your help/advice you have given me
