When this happened to me it lasted about 20 miles but that was having the aircon on etc

Our alternator stopped completely so battery didbt work. 

Rescue service guy charged the battery but it only lasted about 10 minutes at the very most. 

We only turned engine only to help park in drive way, which again the car only drove for 5 mins, by that time the battery had drained. The alternator wasnt doing anything.

so same happened to me… A7 50tdi 2019, all codes matched the document from previous posts, Audi UK pays for everything. Dealership said that the issue is known for about half a year and I should get back my car on Monday. Buckinghamshire 

Has anyone got experience of having this replaced with TD1 registered? Work was approved then declined by local dealer as TD1 flag detected. I had EGR mapped out earlier this year after spending fortune replacing the intake manifolds. 
Dealer are saying it’s no longer covered under the 7yr warranty. 
I’ve escalated to Audi, not holding breath, but wondered if anyone else has had experience in similar situation. 

I doubt it Richard. Any significant modification usually invalidates the warranty, whether it is related to the problem or not. For your sake I'd be glad to be proved wrong.

Hi All

Had the same issue 5 days ago. Symptoms as listed in the discussion. Yellow ELEC FAULT and a cascade of associated messages along with load-shedding of multiple items such as A/C, MMI,Start/Stop button greyed out etc. Fortunately, I was on my way home. Tried to start the car and but it hardly turned over. Used my NOCO jump starter and that got in running instantly. Given that the battery was flat, I put it on charge and drove it directly to Audi with as many power using items switched off. Managed to cover the 15 miles or so.

Having done research overnight, I read up on the 7 year recall and advised Audi of this. They said they would call me after diagnostics. The call confirmed a failed BSG. I also emailed a copy of the BSG Recall Doc that confirmed the no payment would be due. Audi subsequently confirmed that the repair would be FOC. Collecting the car on Monday. Very relieved not to have to pay the bill! My car has the build code 9G8.

I think earlier comments suggesting that the MMI or a light should give a warning that the battery is no longer charging. This was always the case on older cars that had an IGN light so you didn’t get left in the lurch.

When I suggested to Audi they have a ‘ battery not charging ‘ light they told me this was no longer an EU build spec requirement. With so many systems requiring power you would think such a light should be even more important , but the Brussels mandarins who all go to work on a bike do not think so?

... On another forum a member had loads of written exchanges with the DVLA / DVSO on the same subject and they just shrugged a lot.

I think a fundamental problem might be that some dealers will check to see if there is a Recall on a car. By this I mean a Recall that is proactively pushed to owners even if their vehicle is fine.

I could be wrong, but I think that some dealers may not realise that there are a number of active Recall items that only become applicable if a given unit fails. In my case the affected part was the MHEV Belt Starter Generator.(BSG)

Whilst it should not be necessary, it is worth keeping an eye on what recalls are in place on your car, so that if a relevant fault occurs you can take the evidence to Audi. An example is in my post above.

AlexR - unfortunately it's nothing to do with a recall and never will be safety related, despite cars stopping in live lanes etc. Glad your dealer and Audi played ball. There are lots of people who haven't been that lucky. Audi have been in damage limitation mode.

I think it is a great shame that some customers have not had the free of charge repair. Dealers should proactively check current issues reported by customers in case they are covered.

Whilst it certainly pays to do some research on the Gov Website shown above and present the evidence to the dealer’s service department, it should not be something that is necessary.

My own dealership actively distanced themselves from Audi and appeared concerned they wouldn't be paid for extended warranty work. As a result all my negotiations went through Audi Executive Office as the dealership stepped back. I had to pay the full cost up front. Some of the cost was reclaimed through a third party warranty before Audi finally took my complaint seriously. 

Hi All BSG replaced today without question by Audi on my 2000 52,000 mile SQ8tdi. Very efficient process (3 days). Should be eligible for at least one more (25k miles Pa) before the 7 year limit. Always have the warranty up to date or you’ll be in for a £5k shock🤓

Hi. I’ve got the same issues with my a6 c8 alternator 2 days ago, car stopped on the motorway with all the lights coming up on dash board. I’ve booked my a6 to Audi bath for next week , now my question is if someone had the adblue off when they went to Audi for an alternator replacement and they still replaced under recall. Thanks

Bath Audi are familiar with this problem so you should be ok. Cannot see any connection between Adblue and alternator.

I would just play the innocent if and when challenged. My A8 Ad Blue tank lasted 18 months before filling and you only get a warning when low - i would plead ignorance if asked. Audi do void claims for 'unrelated' but warranty-excluding issues.

That’s I was asking because I know some of Audi dealers like(Bristol probably) will try to find any reason not to replace that alternator, even there’s no connection between the alternator and the adblue.. Thanks for the reply, I’ll let you know what they say about it.

I used to use Bristol but did not like their attitude so moved to Bath-same group though but nicer people.

How many miles got your RS6 Mark?, did you have any issues with lights coming up on dash board whiteout reason after replacing this alternator generator?

The alternator went at about 35000 miles, whole car died on a roundabout no steering no door locks etc. since replacement of the starter generator no probs in another 10,000 miles.
