00833 Fault, Camshaft Position

Our car is an Audi A4 B7 3.0TDI quattro 2006

We took her out on Saturday night and drove to the shops 1 mile away. It was cold but she started no problem at home.

When we stopped at the shops she failed to fire up. Turns over fine but no firing.

Left over night until next day when warmer. Still the same issue. RAC called and he tried Easy Start. Nothing. Fault code on OBS reader is 00833 which shows Camshaft position error.

I have ordered a new sensor which I will fit on Friday. Has anyone else experienced this issue with theirs?

There is also an amount off soot on top of the engine which could be from EGR. I*t looks like this has been building up over time but she's never not started.

Its a bit of a worry! any comments would be helpful to either ease the worry or point me in another direction. Thanks

Just for confirmation. I believe there is only one Camshaft Position Sensor on Bank 1. Can anyone confirm or provide an image of location? Thanks

Hi Steve,

She was running short journeys up until 7 weeks ago (15mins each way to work). Now in working 30mins away from home each day mostly down the dual carriage way so she is getting some heat.

I'm not sure on the DPF as its been re-mapped prior to my purchase. All I know is its stage 1 but don't know on DPF etc

I changed the camshaft sensor on Friday and its still throwing the same 00833 code.

After extensive calls and looking I feel the timing may have jumped a tooth on the Chain.

Is Anyone interested in purchasing for spares or repairs.

Interior is in excellent condition. All electrics work. Wheels and tyres all good.

Darkside Developments FMI and hard pipes.

Powerflow exhaust system with rear box delete on both sides.

Pipercross washable filter.

Was running stage 1.

Just fitted new serpentine belt and water pump.

Bodywork all in good condition.

Its such a shame but i dont have the money to fix her.

Let me know before i look to send her for scrap. Id rather she was put to use by someone who needs bit here first

Sensible offers considered

Thanks

  • 2 weeks later...

I’ve used the ‘LLLPARTS’ website to help locate stuff before, it’s free to use.

but it sounds like your cam chains have stretched. ( had mine done in Nov,  tensioners we’re on their limit, so I caught mine in time.now have a dash like Xmas tree, so waiting for everyone to go back to work tomorrow to start calling)
have you searched for Audi specialists in your area?

& have you been able to confirm it’s the sensor not the chains? Think the engines back then had 4? But not sure.

Thanks for your advice, I will have a look at LLLPARTS website.

i had the engine running on easy start yesterday. So going to try the crankshaft sensor first before any further dismantling. I do have soot from the EGR area so will check that after fitting the sensor when I find it!

I’ve not confirmed it’s the sensor but have had some diagnostics done. P0341 error code.

I know the cam chains are a big job, Audi charge about £2500-£3k I believe.
my engine (2015 3.0tdi) needed a lot of new oil seals to go with it too. Job took a garage 4 days (with snags though, should have been 3).

My car was showing same fault, reset, it would just come back after a short time, but was starting and running ok, it rattled on start now & then and occasionally under acceleration, advice I was given was that if it rattled on every start, then the chains/guides/tensioners etc all needed replacing soonest.

not sure what other symptoms you might have, there’s a lot of sound insulation in the A6, so it’s difficult to hear the engine on start with the doors & windows shut.

But either way, good luck.
